The Estadio Olímpico Universitario might be one of the unique stadiums in the world. The structure was formed on a volcanic basis during the 1950s. The unconventional outer form of the stadium comes with its own unique elements. After starting out with a much higher capacity in the early years, the stadium had to be brought down under 80,000 spectators after taking into account the safety considerations. The reduction in stadium capacity has been down without many changes to the platform.

This stadium does not have a roof and it can cause quite a lot of discomfort for fans when the sun is out, which is quite common in Mexico city. It is advisable to use a sunscreen or pick up some of the few options available in the covered seat category.

What is it like for visiting supporters?

Any visiting supporter to the Estadio Olímpico Universitario will be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of things, as this is one of the largest in this part of the world. The ground happens to comprise of four stands – east, west, north, and south. The atmosphere and ambience during those intense match days are impressive. The difference between stands is very minimal. Unlike in modern stadiums were seat numbers are located, Estadio Olímpico Universitario comes with the advantage of being able to choose any seat. In fact, fans will be seated on concrete benches.

Even though the stadium does not get full often, fans can get pretty vocal – especially in the case of high profile games. Most of the hard-core supporters of UNAM Pumas would be seated in the main stand, which is a difference from the norm. For the most part, the fans do not get aggressive and this can bring about an enjoyable ambience.

There would be plenty of stadium vendors who would come about selling drinks and food. There will even be beer on offer. Since most matches kick off in the middle of the afternoon, it can become quite uncomfortable without a sunscreen or a shade. The homogeneous crowd makes it easy to watch and enjoy the match without any problem. After the game, it is relatively easy to get out of the stadium and take a transport on the way back. Despite being quite old and large in capacity, the stadium is quite user friendly while getting in and out.

How to get there by car & Where to park?

One can decide to reach the Estadio Olímpico Universitario by car, as it is well connected with Mexico City. The city centre is around 14 km away from the stadium, which is part of the UNAM University’s main campus. Cruz Azul and America

Estadio Olímpico Universitario is a relatively old place for hosting and witnessing football matches. For this reason, the facility is open for disabled spectators are not on board with the modern stadium. However, there are still special services like a dedicated access and better seating that are available for these fans.
