Visiting supporters will be overwhelmed by the sheer size of Estadio Olimpico Universitario. It is one of the largest stadiums in the world.

The atmosphere and ambience on matchdays are impressive. The difference between the stands is very minimal. Unlike modern stadiums with seat numbers, you can choose any seat at Estadio Olimpico Universitario.

While the stadium is hardly filled, it can get quite loud, especially during high-profile games. Most of the hardcore supporters of UNAM Pumas occupy the main stand, which is not the norm in most stadiums.

There are always plenty of stadium vendors who come about selling drinks and food. Beer is also available. But since most matches kick off in the middle of the afternoon, it can become quite uncomfortable without sunscreen or shade.

Estadio Olimpico Universitario might be one of the unique stadiums in the world. The ground has four stands, namely east, west, north, and south.

The structure was formed on a volcanic basis during the 1950s. The unconventional outer form of the stadium comes with its own unique elements.

After starting with a much higher capacity in the early years, it was later reduced to under 80,000 due to safety considerations. The reduction in stadium capacity was made without altering the stadium’s structures.

With no roof, the stadium can be quite uncomfortable on sunny days. With that, it is therefore advisable to use a sunscreen or book a ticket from the limited options available in the covered seating areas.

By car

You can get to Estadio Olimpico Universitario by car. The venue is well-connected to Mexico City’s transport network. The city centre is around 14 km away from the stadium, which is part of the UNAM University’s main campus.

The Avenida Insurgentes Sur is one of the important city avenues, and one can reach the same via the south avenue. Since the ground is quite far away from the city centre, there are plenty of parking spots.

By train or metro

Public transport is another option, with Estadio Olimpico Universitario well connected by metro or metro bus. Metro is a fixed lane system that runs through the city and connects with the Avenida Insurgentes.

Additionally, there are multiple stops available in the Condesa and Zona Rosa areas via Metro Line 1. One has to look for the Dr Galvez stop, which is a 10-minute walk away from the ground.

Metro Line 3 is another option via Copilco Station, which is around 25 minutes away from the ground.

While beer is often available inside Estadio Olimpico Universitario, it is highly regulated. With that, away fans visiting Estadio Olimpico Universitario, but who would wish to have a pre-match or post-match drink can check out the following nearby pubs:

  • Taco Frontera is located approximately 0.8 miles away from Estadio Olimpico Universitario.
  • La Cerveceria de Barrio Perisur is a popular drinking spot near Estadio Olimpico Universitario.
  • For some sushi, check out Moji Sushi Sucursal Copilco, located approximately 0.5 miles away from the stadium.

There are also restrooms equipped to suit the needs of wheelchair users. Additionally, the stadium has specialised gadgets for persons with hearing and visual challenges.

Ticket prices for watching UNAM Pumas play at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario are reasonable and quite easy to obtain. However, tickets sell out slowly on most days, so visiting supporters who do not book should easily get a seat.

Apart from the official club website, you can check out Ticketmaster sales outlets to pick up tickets for the matches. Ticket prices depend on age, opponent and seating location. For a place behind the goal, the ticket price is usually around MXN 140, while the long sides tend to be a little expensive.

For a seat in the lower section of the long sides, expect to pay around MXN 230. The prices increase to around MXN 290 during big matches, including prices for seats behind the goal. These can be as hig as MXN 180 during high-profile matches.

The ground happens to be one of the top attractions in Mexico City. There is little information about the availability of stadium tours. The best way to access the ground and experience the rich heritage would be to buy tickets for matches involving UNAM Pumas.
