Few moments at a World Cup capture the raw emotion of international football quite like the national anthems.
Before a ball is kicked, players stand shoulder-to-shoulder, supporters rise as one, and entire stadiums unite in song, producing some of the tournament's most memorable scenes right before the action begins.
A new study has analysed every national anthem performed during the 2026 World Cup, ranking all 48 competing nations based on the overall quality and consistency of the renditions delivered by both players and fans.
FootballGroundGuide takes a closer look, including where England and Scotland unexpectedly placed in the final standings.
Japan tops national anthem rankings ahead of Curacao and Iran
Japan, who were eliminated by Brazil on Monday night, emerged as the tournament's standout performer, earning the highest-rated national anthem of all 48 competing nations.
The Samurai Blue consistently delivered polished, unified renditions throughout the World Cup, edging out Curacao in second place and Iran in third.
World Cup debutants Haiti and Cape Verde completed the top five, with both nations producing passionate pre-match performances that quickly became among the most memorable of the tournament.
The United States are the only host nation to feature inside the top 10, finishing ninth, while South Korea, Germany, Algeria and South Africa also ranked among the strongest-performing nations.

England, meanwhile, placed 40th overall and finished in the third tier.
Despite the Three Lions once again attracting strong travelling support, ‘God Save The King' ranked behind several fellow European nations, including Germany, France and Portugal.
Overall, Scotland finished 19 places above England, making them the highest-ranked Home Nation at the 2026 World Cup.
South American heavyweights among the biggest surprises
Some of world football's biggest names were among the lowest-ranked nations in the study.

Spain also found itself near the foot of the standings.
While ‘Marcha Real' remains one of football's most recognisable national anthems, it is one of the few in the world without official lyrics, creating a very different pre-match atmosphere to many of the higher-ranked nations.

From Japan's impeccably performed anthem to the spine-tingling renditions of Flower of Scotland, the 2026 World Cup once again demonstrated how supporters can set the tone before kick-off.
Whether or not the rankings spark debate, they provide another reminder that some of the most unforgettable moments at football's biggest tournament happen before the referee even blows the first whistle.
