A guide to Scotland’s base camp at Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Scotland's Euro 2024 campaign will begin on Friday night when they take on Germany at the Allianz Arena. Although their preparation for the tournament hasn't been ideal, with a struggling win over Gibraltar and a draw with Finland in the last week, the nation is full of excitement ahead of what they hope will be a memorable tournament.

Steve Clarke and his squad of 26 players flew to Germany on Sunday to continue their final preparations for the tournament ahead of their opener on Friday night. Where is Scotland's base camp for Euro 2024 and what made them choose it? Here is everything you need to know.

What is Scotland's base camp for Euro 2024 like?

Scotland's base camp for Euro 2024 is in the Bavarian resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. They are staying at Hotel Obermuhle in the resort which is right on the border of Austria. The Alpine resort is picturesque which means the players and staff will get to enjoy stunning views during their stay in Germany.

Aside from the picturesque views, Scotland players will live like royalty during their Euro 2024 campaign. Hotel Obermuhle has 120 rooms which means there is plenty of room for all the players and their families and has been owned by the same family for the past 400 years.

Inside the resort, there is a penthouse suite, a private spa, a panoramic sauna and a roof terrace where views of the nearby mountains can be enjoyed. It should, therefore, be the ideal place for the players to relax in between matches and training.  The training ground that Scotland will use during Euro 2024 is a short walk from the hotel.

The mountain that overlooks the hotel has gained a lot of attention online due to its amusing name. ‘Mount Wank' has a summit of 1700 metres above sea level and to reach the top, tourists have to take the Wankbahn. At the summit, tourists are then able to eat at a restaurant called ‘Wankstuberl'.

Scotland receive warm welcome to base camp

Upon their arrival at Hotel Obermuhle on Sunday, the Scotland team were given a warm welcome by locals and the town's mayor, Elizabeth Koch.

A Bavarian band were accompanied by dancers to greet Steve Clarke and his team with midfielder, John McGinn, joining in with the festivities much to the joy of the locals in attendance.

Scotland captain, Andy Robertson, appreciated the welcome and told the crowds of people afterwards:

“Thank you for the warm welcome. It has been a long day’s travelling and I think we are all ready for bed but the welcome has been amazing.

“I am sure the locals will be very friendly towards us when we are here and hopefully we can win football matches and keep us here as long as possible. We know the fans will come over in their numbers, they will enjoy themselves and they will be respectful and I hope they celebrate us winning games as well.”

What has Steve Clarke said about Scotland's base camp for Euro 2024?

The Scottish FA had earmarked Hotel Obermule as their priority when they first started to look for Euro 2024 base camps last year. Upon securing the hotel, Steve Clarke said:

“It was important for us to finalise our preparations for EURO 2024 as soon as possible and I’m very pleased to have secured our first-choice base camp for the tournament.

“Garmisch-Partenkirchen will make for a comfortable base for our players and backroom staff for the duration of our stay at the tournament.”

Graeme Jones, Scottish FA Performance Director added: “From the moment we qualified, Garmisch-Partenkirchen was our preferred location for team base camp and to be honest, I was more excited that the draw enabled us to have our first pick than I was at playing the opening match.

“The priority is making sure the players have the best preparation possible for the Euros and Obermühle gives us a perfect balance of first-class facilities and a breathtaking, tranquil setting for the players to focus on the challenges ahead.

“The hotel staff, the Mayor and District Administrator could not have been more welcoming during the site visit.”
