Arsenal have reportedly taken fresh steps towards a potential expansion of the Emirates Stadium as the club explores ways to increase capacity and revenue.

The Gunners are said to be consulting with Populous – the architects behind both Wembley and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – as discussions over the future of their north London home continue.

According to CityAM, Arsenal are weighing up a range of options for the Emirates Stadium, from relatively modest hospitality improvements to major redevelopment work that could significantly increase the ground’s current 60,000 capacity.

Populous, one of the world’s leading stadium architecture firms, are understood to be involved in early conversations. The company originally designed the Emirates and has since worked on several major venues, including Wembley and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It's claimed that sources close to the process insist no final decision has been made, with club executives exploring every possible route before committing to a long-term plan.

One possibility reportedly under consideration would involve major structural work that could even require Arsenal to temporarily relocate while construction takes place.

Arsenal are under no immediate pressure to act, given the club’s strong position both on and off the pitch. Mikel Arteta’s side are currently pushing for a first top-flight title in 22 years and are also preparing for a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain later this month.

However, the landscape around them has changed considerably since the Emirates first opened in 2006. Tottenham’s new 62,850-capacity stadium, West Ham’s move to the London Stadium, and Liverpool’s recent Anfield expansion have all overtaken Arsenal in Premier League capacity rankings.

The club also strengthened its infrastructure expertise last year with the appointment of Otto Maly, who previously played a major role in the development of the 70,000-seat SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles through Arsenal owners Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, to the board.

FGG says: Emirates expansion talks show Arsenal aren’t standing still

This feels very much like the club laying the groundwork for something bigger in the years ahead.

Whether it leads to a full stadium expansion or more targeted, revenue‑driven upgrades, the fact that they are back in discussions with Populous is a strong sign that serious planning is happening behind the scenes.

With rivals modernising and expanding their grounds, Arsenal know they can’t afford to fall behind, both commercially and competitively.

Opening talks now suggests they’re thinking proactively about the next phase of the Emirates, not reacting to pressure.

Whatever direction they choose, it’s clear the club is preparing for long‑term growth rather than simply maintaining the status quo.
