In terms of history and tradition, Italian football is blessed when it comes to football stadia. From San Siro and the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to the Stadio Olimpico and Stadio Artemio Franchi, there is a reason that Serie A was once considered the pinnacle of European football.

However, there is also a reason why all the biggest Italian football clubs have either already switched stadiums or are seriously considering it.

Roma, who have played their home matches at the Stadio Olimpico since 1953, are pushing forward with plans to build a new stadium and last week, they took a big step towards turning these plans into a reality.

Feasibility study completed

On Tuesday, 23 December, Roma announced that a Technical and Economic Feasibility Study (PFTE) had been completed on their proposed new stadium. The club say that the completion of this study is a ‘crucial step' in the process of moving out of the Olimpico and into their new home.

As part of the study, several new design details of the new stadium were revealed. One of the most striking aspects of their new home will be the largest ‘Curva Sud' in Europe. This area of the stadium will be where the club's most loyal and loudest supporters will sit/stand. The club states that this area will be the ‘beating heart' of the stadium.

It has also been revealed that iconic Roman architecture will be used to inspire the stadium's overall design, while modern, multifunctional spaces will be built to improve fan experience on both matchdays and non-matchdays.

Finally, Roma have confirmed that they will undertake initiatives to improve mobility and accessibility at the stadium, something that is lacking at the Stadio Olimpico.

FGG says: Helping to modernise Italian football

There is an acceptance that Italian football has been left behind in Europe, but the country's biggest clubs are at least now finally trying to do something about it. Yes, it will be a shame from a nostalgic point of view to see Roma leave the Stadio Olimpico and for the San Siro to be demolished, but holding on to the past is rarely a successful strategy in football.

Roma will now be looking to get spades into the ground as quickly as possible in order to ensure they stay well on track to have their new stadium built and ready in time for Euro 2032.
