Work to repair the Balaidos Stadium pitch is moving quickly after Celta Vigo's opening LaLiga fixture was postponed because of a fungal outbreak.
At the same time, major redevelopment work continues at the stadium as Vigo prepares for its expected role as a 2030 World Cup host.
Balaidos pitch renovation nearly complete after postponed LaLiga opener
The installation of new turf at Balaidos is nearing completion after the pitch was deemed unfit for Celta's opening LaLiga fixture against Osasuna.
The match was postponed after a fungal outbreak, which was linked to the recent heatwave in Galicia, with the fixture now scheduled for August 27th.
The installation of the new turf rolls was practically completed on Wednesday, with four machines due to begin stitching the sections together before the work is completed over the weekend.
Away from the pitch, construction of the new Gol Stand is continuing.
The fourth of 16 sections of elevated mesh supporting the new roof was installed this week, with Vigo mayor Abel Caballero targeting the opening of the stand for the derby against Deportivo in early 2027.
The lower section already has its new seats installed and the completed stand will provide around 7,000 seats, taking Balaídos' capacity to approximately 31,000.
Further work is also underway with the 2030 World Cup in mind, including underground drainage works that will allow the Tribuna Stand to be moved 30 metres backwards and create additional capacity.
Vigo's inclusion in the 2030 World Cup is expected to be formally confirmed in September.
FGG says: The Balaidos is moving in the right direction
The postponed Celta fixture was an unfortunate setback, but the speed of the pitch repairs is encouraging and should ensure the stadium can get back to normal quickly.
More importantly, the wider redevelopment is continuing at pace, with the new Gol Stand already beginning to transform the ground.
With 2030 World Cup preparations gathering momentum, Balaidos is finally starting to look like the modern international venue Vigo has been working towards.
