LaLiga opening fixture postponed after potential 2030 World Cup stadium hit by surprise outbreak

Celta Vigo's opening LaLiga fixture of the 2026/27 season has been postponed after a fungal outbreak left the pitch at Estadio de Balaidos unfit for football.

The decision means Celta and Osasuna will now have to wait until August 27 to begin their league campaigns, with the change already causing frustration for the visitors.

Celta were due to host Osasuna on Sunday 16th August, but LaLiga has postponed the fixture after an outbreak of fungus affected the playing surface, as per the BBC.

A pitch inspection was carried out on Wednesday, with Celta previously attempting to eradicate the problem.

The club said a technical inspection last week had confirmed that the pitch met the required safety and quality standards, but weather conditions in recent days had caused the condition of the surface to deteriorate.

The match will now be played on Thursday 27th August at 19:30 BST.

Osasuna have strongly criticised the decision, saying both clubs had agreed that September 24th or 25th, during the international break, would have been a better alternative.

The club accused LaLiga of a lack of foresight and professionalism and said the decision disproportionately affected the visitors.

Balaídos has been undergoing redevelopment for more than a decade and is expected to be among the Spanish venues used at the 2030 World Cup.

Its eventual capacity is expected to rise to between 40,000 and 44,000.

It is frustrating for Celta and Osasuna, but postponing the game is clearly the right decision if the pitch is genuinely unsafe or unfit for professional football.

The timing is far less convincing, though. Leaving the decision until just days before the fixture was always going to cause disruption, particularly when both clubs had apparently discussed an alternative date.

For a stadium undergoing such a long-term transformation, ensuring the pitch is ready for regular football has to remain one of the priorities.
