Barcelona have moved a significant step closer to bringing the UEFA Champions League final back to Camp Nou after receiving a major boost from the Spanish government.

The iconic stadium has not staged European football's showpiece match since the famous 1999 final between Manchester United and Bayern Munich, but that could now change as the redeveloped venue prepares for a new era.

Spanish government approves Camp Nou bid to host 2029 Champions League final

The Spanish government has officially approved the Royal Spanish Football Federation's bid to host the 2029 UEFA Champions League final at Spotify Camp Nou, per Sport.

The decision, approved by Spain's Council of Ministers, allows the formal candidacy to be submitted to UEFA ahead of the June 10th deadline.

UEFA is expected to announce its final decision in September, with Barcelona's redeveloped stadium set to compete against Wembley Stadium in London for the hosting rights.

Camp Nou already holds a rich history when it comes to European finals.

The stadium hosted AC Milan's victory over Steaua Bucharest in the 1989 European Cup final before becoming the setting for one of football's most memorable nights in 1999, when United scored twice in stoppage time to defeat Bayern and complete a historic treble.

Barcelona's ongoing redevelopment project is expected to transform the stadium into one of the largest and most advanced football venues in the world.

Once completed, the revamped Camp Nou is projected to hold around 105,000 spectators and feature a full roof alongside extensive modern facilities.

Current expectations suggest construction will be substantially completed by the end of the 2027/28 season, comfortably ahead of a potential 2029 final.

FGG says: Exactly the type of event the new Camp Nou was built for

If UEFA wants to showcase the very best of modern European football infrastructure, a completed Camp Nou hosting a Champions League final would be difficult to ignore.

The redevelopment project has always been about more than increasing capacity or modernising facilities. It is about restoring one of football's most iconic stadiums to the very top tier of the global sporting landscape.

Hosting the Champions League final would feel like a symbolic statement that the transformation is complete.

There is still competition from Wembley, which remains one of UEFA's favourite major-event venues. But if the redevelopment stays on schedule and delivers what has been promised, it is easy to see why Barcelona would feel confident about its chances.

For Barca supporters, the possibility of Europe's biggest club match returning to Camp Nou for the first time in three decades would be another landmark moment in the stadium's new chapter.
