Barcelona have reportedly already begun preparing contingency plans for the later stages of the Camp Nou redevelopment amid concerns over potential disruption during a key phase of the project.

The Spanish giants are understood to have formally requested the option of remaining away from their traditional home for longer than initially expected.

Barcelona move forward with Olympic Stadium contingency plans

According to reports from Spain, Barcelona have submitted a formal request to local authorities seeking permission to continue using the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys during the first half of the 2027/28 season.

The move is being viewed as a precautionary step while the club prepares for one of the most complex stages of the Camp Nou renovation – the installation of the stadium's new roof.

Current technical assessments reportedly estimate that work on the roof could take between four and five months after beginning in summer 2027, creating uncertainty around whether the stadium would be fully ready for the start of the campaign.

Rather than risk potential scheduling and logistical issues later on, Barcelona appear keen to secure a backup option early.

The Olympic Stadium currently looks the preferred solution internally due to its larger capacity and stronger revenue potential.

An alternative option involving the expansion of the Estadi Johan Cruyff remains under consideration, although that would reportedly require around €14 million (£12 million) of additional investment while still generating significantly lower income.

Barcelona are said to view Montjuic as offering far greater financial and operational certainty if construction timelines slip.

FGG says: Timeline concern is exactly why Barcelona are acting now

The fact that Barcelona are making formal requests this far in advance tells you there is still some uncertainty around the Camp Nou timeline.

That does not necessarily mean there are major problems, but it does suggest the club are being realistic about the scale of what remains. Installing a stadium roof on a project of this size is not exactly a minor finishing touch.

If there is even a chance of delays affecting the opening months of a season, it makes complete sense to lock down a proven backup plan now rather than scramble for solutions later.
