Barcelona has been struck by tragedy after the news that a worker has died during the ongoing reconstruction of the Camp Nou.

An accident occurred at the Camp Nou construction site on Friday, 24 July, with reports that a 54-year-old worker had died while carrying out work at Barcelona's home stadium.

Local police confirmed the worker's death that evening, and authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death, though Catalan regional police have said the worker is believed to have died as a result of an external blow.

The tragic event is the first fatal accident of the Camp Nou reconstruction project, which is now in its third year after work first got underway back in June 2023.

Following the news of the 54-year-old's death, Barcelona issued a statement offering their support to the family.

“FC Barcelona deeply regrets the death of the worker who lost his life yesterday in the workplace accident that occurred during the renovation works at Spotify Camp Nou.”

“The club wishes to express its deepest condolences and extend its heartfelt support to his family, friends and colleagues.”

“FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta wishes to personally convey his condolences to the family and places himself at their disposal on behalf of the entire club.”

Work ongoing at the Camp Nou

The Camp Nou reconstruction project has faced multiple delays since getting underway in June 2023, despite the club initially preparing to return to their home ground in August last year.

However, the club's return was not a full reopening of the stadium, with construction work still to be carried out.

New three-tier spectator stands, VIP areas, roof structures, internal facilities and general maintenance work around the stadium are scheduled to continue, with the entire construction project planned for completion in spring 2028.

FGG Says: Tragedy overshadows reconstruction project

What was meant to be an exciting time for Barcelona fans, with continued work to improve their stadium and the season set to start in the coming weeks, has been overshadowed by the tragic news of the worker's death.
