Bramley-Moore Dock set to host major Rugby series after 20-year hiatus

Bramley-Moore Dock will not only be hosting football; it looks like it could also host the Rugby League Ashes series.

According to LoveRugbyLeague, Bramley-Moore Dock is one of two major football venues that could play host to the long-awaited Rugby League return.

The return of the Ashes was initially set to occur in Australia, following its announcement in 2023 as part of changes to the international schedule, but that plan was altered last autumn. This will mark the first occasion since 2003 that the Kangaroos have travelled to compete in an Ashes series, with the last being a matchup between Australia and Great Britain.

Wembley, the other football stadium set to host, while Everton’s luxurious new stadium along Liverpool’s waterfront, will make up the double-header of football stadiums.

Bramley-Moore Dock and Wembley step out of the football shadow

No official announcement has been made as of yet by the RFL, but speculation is that official news could soon follow. Our speculation is that they need to wait for the second test event at Bramley-Moore Dock to confirm its certificate before announcing plans to play there.

England boss Shaun Wane spoke about the series last year.

“I was brought up on Australia and New Zealand in the 70s and 80s. I remember getting the job in 2020 with an Ashes series against Australia and thinking ‘I can’t believe how lucky I am. Then it got cancelled and I was absolutely devastated, so to get this on again and for them to travel here would be unbelievable. I’m so excited and can’t wait for it now. I like Australia and I really fancied playing the Ashes there and trying to beat them. But having it here and giving ourselves the best chance of beating the best team in the world really excites me. Doing that at home, in front of full houses, I’d love that.”

A date for the tour has not been confirmed, though we would assume it would be set for some time after the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season. An announcement is coming soon, however, with ticket sales needing to be placed on sale well before the event starts.

FGG says: Bramley-Moore Dock steps up

With Bramley-Moore Dock not yet officially open, it's good to see Everton already looking to get use of it outside of football. In modern football, external events are key to getting more funding into the club, with a stadium being a football clubs only real external cash outlet. While we don't expect an official announcement imminently, media speculation may cause the timeline to get bumped forward.
