On Wednesday, 18 March, Newcastle will travel to Catalonia to take on Barcelona at the Camp Nou. It will be the third time that the two sides have met this season, and it could end up being a night that goes down in Newcastle United folklore.

Trips to stadiums such as the Camp Nou are the reason why Newcastle fans were so keen to see their team qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The Magpies haven't played here since the 2002/03 season, meaning this will be the first chance to visit Europe's biggest stadium for the vast majority of travelling Geordies.

If you are making the trip over to Barcelona for the clash, here is everything you need to know about the Camp Nou away section and Barcelona away in general.

What is Barcelona like for away fans?

Barcelona is one of the best cities to visit as a travelling football fan, particularly if you are coming from the United Kingdom. It is easy and often cheap to get to, and you can guarantee the weather is going to be nice 99% of the time.

The city is big, but most of the time, away fans end up in Placa Reial, which is situated just off La Rambla in the Gothic Quarter. This square is vast, and its perimeter is wall-to-wall bars and restaurants, so it's easy to see why English fans enjoy it here so much.

For fans who aren't overly fussed about drinking in the sun all day, or those who want to sample a bit of the city's culture, there is plenty to see and do. The standout sight is unquestionably the Sagrada Familia.

Barcelona supporters are highly unlikely to cause any grief, unless they are provoked, so be respectful and treat the locals appropriately. One thing you always need to keep an eye on in Barcelona is pickpockets, and this is the case regardless of whether you are a football fan or not.

Where to drink for Newcastle fans in Barcelona?

As mentioned, most fans are going to naturally end up in the Gothic Quarter. Away from Placa Reial, the following bars are worth checking out:

  • Don Bar – Carrer del Comte d'Urgell, 122, Eixample, 08011 Barcelona, Spain
  • Flaherty's – Placa de Joaquim Xirau, s/n, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain
  • Dr Stravinsky – Carrer dels Mirallers, 5, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

What will the Barcelona away section be like for Newcastle fans?

Newcastle fans are going to have a very different Camp Nou experience from all other English fans who have visited the stadium over the years. Traditionally, the away end is high up in the uppermost tier of the Camp Nou; however, due to ongoing renovation work, only the lower half of the stadium is open.

Newcastle fans will still be placed as high up as possible in one of the corners, but this will only be around halfway up the giant stadium, as opposed to right at the top.

Unfortunately, that is where the good news ends. Perspex glass will cover the front of the away end, which slightly distorts the view of the action and massively reduces the impact of the stadium's atmosphere.

How many Newcastle fans are going to Barcelona?

It is still unclear how many Newcastle fans will be inside the Camp Nou on matchday. The official allocation stands at 2,215, but there is hope that this will be increased to 3,100 in the coming days.

There is a high chance that thousands of Newcastle fans will travel over without tickets. Early estimates suggest this figure could be in excess of 10,000, and Barcelona have had to pause ticket sales due to suspicious activity around ticket purchases next to the official away end.

How Newcastle fans can get to Camp Nou

Getting to the Camp Nou from the centre of Barcelona is easy enough, but it does require either public transport or a taxi. The quickest and cheapest option is to use the city's metro system. Fans should take line three and depart at either Collblanc or Badal, both of which are a short walk away from the Camp Nou.
