Vertu Trophy draw: Key dates and format of the EFL Trophy explained

The 2025/26 EFL season is well underway, and all 72 teams are now beginning to gain an understanding of what they will be playing for come May.

For all 48 teams in Leagues One and Two, there is also the small matter of the Vertu Trophy, which got underway at the beginning of September.

The tournament has been named various things over the years for sponsorship reasons, but the premise has remained the same; it's a chance for clubs in the bottom two divisions of the EFL to win a trophy.

Last year, the Vertu trophy was won by Peterborough United for the second consecutive year, after they defeated Birmingham City at Wembley Stadium in April. Posh will be looking to make it a hat-trick of successes this year, but Birmingham won't be taking part after securing promotion to the Championship.

With the group stages of the Vertu Trophy now complete, learn everything you need to know about the competition, including round dates and format, below.

Vertu Trophy 2025/26: Round of 32 draw

Now that the group stages of the competition are complete, attention turns to the knockout stages. The draw for the Round of 32 will take place on Thursday, 13 November 14:30 local time.

The Round of 32 remains a regional round, meaning no teams from the north and south can be drawn to play against each other. Instead, each group winner from each region will be paired with a runner-up from the same region.

The only under-21 team to make it through to the knockout stages this season are West Ham. The young Hammers qualified as runners-up in Southern Group D, courtesy of having a better goal difference than Reading.

Vertu Trophy: Format explained

The Vertu Trophy includes all 24 teams in League One and Two, as well as 16 Premier League under-21 teams from Category One academies. All 64 teams enter the group stage, which is split into 16 regional groups of four clubs – with eight in the Northern region and eight in the Southern region.

As per the EFL: “The 16 invited under-21 teams will be placed into their respective Northern and Southern regional Groups, with the 48 EFL Clubs placed into pre-determined Groups prior to the draw.

“Consideration has been given to ensure travel time is minimised and recovery time is maximised for players.”

The top two teams in each group will then advance to the Round of 32, with the group winners seeded and the runners-up unseeded. The Round of 32, Round of 16 and quarter-finals are also regionalised.

The final is typically played in April at Wembley, with the biggest crowd coming in 2019 when over 85,000 people came to watch Portsmouth take on Sunderland.

Premier League academy sides' best performances in the Vertu Trophy

Since 2016, the EFL have allowed 16 category one Premier League and Championship teams to join the competition, with organisers believing that it has a positive impact on young players' development.

The best performance of any academy side in the Vertu Trophy so far was back in 2018 when Chelsea made it all the way to the semi-finals. They were desperately close to reaching the final, too, but ultimately lost to Lincoln City in a penalty shootout.

During the 2024/25 edition of the tournament, the furthest any academy side got was the Round of 16. Aston Villa were the only academy side to reach this stage, where they ultimately lost 3-1 to Bradford City at Villa Park.
