Leeds United have reached a landmark moment in the redevelopment of Elland Road after physical work officially began on the first phase of the stadium transformation.

After years of discussion and planning, supporters can now see tangible progress as the club moves forward with one of the most significant infrastructure projects in its modern history.

West Stand works kick off Elland Road redevelopment

The Elland Road redevelopment project is officially underway, with work beginning on the West Stand as Leeds United embark on a major stadium transformation project.

The first stage has seen the removal of the Banqueting Suite, marking the beginning of a redevelopment that will eventually reshape the stadium and increase its capacity significantly.

Club executives, representatives from Leeds City Council and Leeds United Foundation, along with club ambassadors Stuart Dallas, Tony Dorigo and Eddie Gray, were present to mark the occasion.

The West Stand project is the first phase of Leeds' long-term vision to transform Elland Road into a UEFA Category 4 stadium.

The new stand will be constructed over the existing structure and is expected to play a major role in increasing the stadium's capacity, helping address a season-ticket waiting list that now stands at around 32,000 supporters.

Alongside the additional seats, the £150 million redevelopment will deliver improved sightlines, enhanced concourses, expanded fan facilities, greater accessibility and upgraded hospitality areas.

The club also believes the project could strengthen Leeds' ability to attract major international sporting events and tournaments in the future, generating wider economic benefits for the city region.

FGG says: Elland Road expansion was necessary

The sheer size of the season‑ticket waiting list shows why expansion is no longer a luxury but a necessity.

And the plans for the new West Stand strike the right balance by modernising facilities, improving comfort and accessibility, and elevating Elland Road to UEFA Category 4 status, all while protecting the atmosphere that makes the ground one of English football’s most intimidating venues.

There’s a long road ahead, but this is the milestone fans have been waiting years to witness. After endless proposals, presentations and planning, Leeds supporters can finally point to real construction work and say, with pride and relief, that the transformation of Elland Road is truly underway.
