England supporters travelling to Texas for the Three Lions’ opening World Cup clash against Croatia have been warned about the serious health risks posed by extreme heat during the tournament.

Academics monitoring conditions ahead of the 2026 World Cup say fans, rather than players, could face the biggest danger during matches held in North America this summer.

England fans warned about intense Texas heat during Dallas World Cup clash

England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on June 17th, with researchers warning that conditions outside the stadium could become dangerously hot.

While the venue itself is air-conditioned, concerns centre around supporters travelling to matches, standing in queues, attending fan festivals and spending prolonged periods outdoors before and after games.

According to research from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group, via the Independent, there is a one-in-three chance that the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) in Dallas will exceed 28°C on the day of England’s opener.

WBGT measures how effectively the human body can cool itself, with global players’ union FIFPRO recommending matches be postponed above that threshold.

Dr Chris Millington of Imperial College London warned that ordinary supporters are significantly more vulnerable than professional athletes due to factors such as dehydration, alcohol consumption, medical conditions and unfamiliarity with extreme heat.

“They may be exposed for much longer than the match itself,” Millington explained, highlighting long walks, crowded transport, direct sun exposure and time spent in fan zones as major concerns.

FIFA has already confirmed that hydration breaks will take place midway through each half during every World Cup match this summer, while cooling stations, shaded areas, misting systems and extra water distribution points are also planned for supporters when temperatures rise above certain levels.

Academics have also urged FIFA to rethink the scheduling of future summer tournaments in particularly hot climates.

FGG says: This is one of the biggest off-pitch concerns for fans at the World Cup

The heat issue increasingly feels like one of the defining concerns heading into this World Cup, especially with so many matches being played in intense summer conditions across the United States.

England fans heading to Dallas will probably feel reassured knowing the stadium itself is climate-controlled, but the warnings show the bigger risks come before supporters even get inside.

Between long queues, fan parks, alcohol and hours spent outdoors, it is not difficult to see how serious problems could quickly develop if people are not careful.
