Fresh concerns have been raised after a striking image of BMO Field, one of the 16 host venues at the 2026 World Cup, began to circulate online.

Supporters have questioned the safety and design of a temporary structure set to be used during the tournament.

BMO Field has built a temporary stand for 2026 World Cup

BMO Field, home to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, is due to host six matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including five group games and one knockout fixture.

To meet tournament requirements, the stadium’s capacity has been increased from just under 30,000 to around 45,000 through the installation of two large temporary stands, adding roughly 17,000 extra seats.

Images of one of those structures have sparked debate online, with the stand appearing steep, curved and supported by visible scaffolding.

Some fans have also pointed out that the seating position looks distant from the pitch, with potential for obstructed views due to the roof of the existing stand.

Reactions on Reddit have been mixed, with several supporters admitting the structure “looks terrifying,” despite acknowledging that such builds are typically safe and widely used in major events.

Others compared it to Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium, given the fact that they have had a similar-looking temporary stand in place for the past 26 years.

While the visuals may appear unsettling at first glance, temporary stands like this are designed to meet strict engineering and safety standards.

Major tournaments regularly rely on these kinds of expansions to increase capacity without committing to permanent redevelopment, and they are thoroughly tested before being approved for public use.

In reality, this is likely a case of it looking worse than it actually is. It may not win any beauty contests, but there is little reason to doubt it will safely serve its purpose during the 2026 World Cup.

Just maybe make sure to wrap up warm.
