Harry Maguire chant: Lyrics, tune and story behind England cult hero

Harry Maguire has had a rollercoaster of a career over the past decade, and, even to this day, he remains a player who divides opinion across English football.

The current Manchester United defender rose to superstardom during the 2018 World Cup, when the then-Leicester City central defender was one of England's standout performers on their route to the World Cup semi-finals.

A year later, Maguire joined Man United in a mega-money move, and, after a largely impressive first year at Old Trafford, his popularity across the country began to dwindle as the defender made a series of high-profile mistakes, eventually losing his status as club captain to Bruno Fernandes.

However, the Red Devils defender has gradually started to rediscover his best form and reputation in recent years, thanks in large part to the number of big goals he has scored for the Red Devils in crucial matches.

Despite Maguire impressively rediscovering his form throughout 2025/26, the defender was not called up for the England squad that placed third at the 2026 World Cup – a decision that split opinion across the country.

Now during the early stages of the 2026/27 season, Maguire has started all of the Red Devils' Premier League games and appears to be a key part of their defensive unit, and that is likely to be the case until summer 2027, when the club are rumoured to be looking at a defensive rebuild.

The Harry Maguire chant is considered more of an England chant than a Man Utd chant, although the Old Trafford faithful do have a slightly modified version (more on that shortly).

The most popular Maguire chant is sung to the tune of Mexican folk song La Bamba, and the lyrics are as follows:

The Man Utd version of the chant is slightly different, with United fans adjusting it to focus more on his big-money move from Leicester City to Manchester. The lyrics are as followss:

Harry Maguire chant origins

The Harry Maguire chant above was first heard during the 2018 World Cup, when England fans were having the time of their lives in Russia.

Maguire scored a couple of goals for England at the tournament and was considered one of the breakout stars for the Three Lions.

If England had gone on to win the World Cup that year, Maguire winning the player of the tournament wouldn't have been out of the question – that’s how impressive he was.

With Maguire now out of the England picture, and unlikely to return given his reaction to being dropped from the 2026 World Cup squad, we may never hear the England version of the chant ever again.

FGG says: A reminder of an enjoyable tournament

At this point, the Harry Maguire chant is nothing more than a reminder of what was an excellent World Cup in Russia for England. It was effectively the sound of the summer, much in the way that the Phil Foden chant was the sound of the European Championships in 2024, and ‘Football's coming home again with Tommy Tuchel' was the sound of the '26 World Cup.

Although the chant has never taken off in the same way at Old Trafford, with it very rarely being heard being sung by the Manchester United faithful in recent seasons, the player is now widely loved by Man Utd fans. During his time at the club, he has scored several huge goals, including a late winner at Anfield last season.
