Inter Miami are facing last-minute complications ahead of the historic opening of their new home, Nu Stadium, with the venue still awaiting a key permit just hours before the first match.

The MLS side are scheduled to host Austin FC in Matchday 6 of the Major League Soccer season, marking the long-anticipated debut of the stadium located within the Miami Freedom Park development.

However, city officials have confirmed the ground has not yet received a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO) – a document required to allow public use of a newly built facility before final inspections are completed.

Fox Sports reporter Andy Slater wrote on X, “Inter Miami’s match on Saturday may have to take place under a ‘limited event permit… with restrictions and additional precautions’ if Nu Stadium does not receive a temporary certificate of occupancy, city officials say.”

Permit uncertainty raises concerns before inaugural match

Local authorities say they are still working with the stadium’s developers to issue the required certificate before kick-off.

A spokesperson for the City of Miami explained; “The city is working diligently with the representatives of Nu Stadium to issue the TCO by April 4th’s inaugural game.”

If the permit is not approved in time, officials say the match could still go ahead under a limited event permit, which would allow the game to take place with restrictions, additional safety precautions and specific operating hours.

The permit issue centres on final construction checks and ensuring the parts of the stadium accessible to fans meet life-safety and building code requirements before the venue can fully open to the public.

Despite the administrative complication, there has been no indication that the match will be postponed, with contingency measures already prepared if the certificate is not issued in time.

Messi era drives urgency for new stadium

The opening of the new venue has been one of the club’s biggest priorities since the arrival of global superstar Lionel Messi in 2023.

Inter Miami executives even coordinated with the league so that the club’s first five matches of the 2026 MLS season were played away from home, ensuring the stadium would be ready for its debut fixture against Austin.

The only exception came earlier this year in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, when Inter Miami had to host Nashville SC at their previous temporary home, Chase Stadium, where they were eliminated after a 1-1 draw.

Nu Stadium itself is expected to seat around 26,700 fans and forms the centrepiece of the wider Miami Freedom Park complex, a major entertainment development featuring retail, dining and public park areas.

FGG Says

Stadium openings rarely go completely smoothly, but permit issues hours before kick-off highlight just how tight the timeline has been for Inter Miami’s new home.

With Messi drawing global attention and more than 20,000 fans expected for the opener, the club will be desperate for a seamless debut. Even if the match proceeds under a limited permit, the situation underscores how ambitious stadium projects often face last-minute hurdles before the turnstiles finally open.
