Ipswich Town have taken another significant step in the ongoing modernisation of Portman Road after submitting planning permission for major upgrades around the West Stand.
With the club continuing to prepare infrastructure improvements following their Premier League return, the latest proposals focus heavily on improving supporter experience, accessibility and matchday movement around the stadium.
Ipswich Town apply for West Stand expansion planning permission
Ipswich have officially submitted plans to expand the concourse area beneath the West Stand at Portman Road.
The proposal would push the concourse further into the space behind the stand, increasing its size, with upgraded and relocated kiosks and new automated turnstiles to ease congestion.
The project also includes a full refurbishment of the fanzone, improved toilet facilities, new boundary structures, extra parking, and a digital display board. Hospitality areas would be enhanced with expanded catering, a new bar and seating, and a dedicated entrance.
Accessibility is a major focus, with improved access routes, multi‑faith facilities, changing rooms and upgraded supporter amenities. The Junior Blues area would also be relocated within the stand.
The club’s Design and Access Statement describes the plans as a “progressive development” aimed at improving comfort, safety and matchday flow, while noting “tremendous time pressure” on delivering the West Stand upgrades.
The submission follows earlier comments from CEO Mark Ashton about wider redevelopment plans around the stand ahead of any long‑term rebuild of the Cobbold Stand.

FGG says: Ipswich fans will appreciate matchday improvements like this
Not every stadium project needs to involve huge new stands or dramatic capacity increases to matter to supporters.
From an Ipswich fan perspective, much of this proposal targets the parts of the matchday experience people deal with every single week, ranging from queues, congestion, facilities, accessibility to movement around the ground.
Those kinds of improvements may not always generate the same excitement as a giant redevelopment announcement, but they often have a more immediate impact on supporters actually attending games.
The fact that Ipswich continue investing in Portman Road infrastructure also sends another positive signal about the club's longer-term direction following promotion.
