Joe Gomez to return: Fans react to England recall

Joe Gomez is set to be recalled to the England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium at Wembley Stadium.

According to Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports News, Gomez will be in Southgate’s squad for the first time in four years.

Southgate will announce his squad for the two friendlies against Brazil and Belgium on Thursday, March 14, at 2pm.

‘Absolute no brainer’ – Fans agree with Gomez selection

Fans were happy to see the news that the Liverpool defender is set to be recalled to the England set-up. Over on X.com (formerly Twitter), @SBailey1008 said: “Absolute no brainer Gomez, should be starting LB at the Euros as well, gutted for Curtis Jones cause he would surely have been a shoe in here as well.”

Gomez’ versatility has been key for Liverpool this season in their hunt for four trophies. The 26-year-old has played in four different positions, including right-back, left-back, centre-back, and even defensive midfield. With Kieran Trippier, Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell, and Reece James injured, the introduction of Gomez will provide England with the necessary cover.

@Jcomps123 said: “There’s not really a case against Gomez, been playing LB where Southgate’s first 2 options are both injured and not really any outstanding candidates atm.”

@TheAnfieldBuzz applauded the rumoured selection of Gomez by posting, “Congratulations to Joe Gomez, who is set to be named in the England squad for the first time in four years. Well deserved.”

Butland back in the England frame

Fans were also keen to react to the news that Jack Butland is set to return to the England squad.

Butland has impressed for Rangers this season and will make his first appearance for the Three Lions since September 2018.

A prominent Rangers fan on X.com called @PenaCartel said: “Some man, some keeper. Fully deserved,” accompanied by a GIF of the English keeper making an impressive save.

@Jock_Rangers added, “Brilliant to see him get the recognition he deserves.”
