John McGinn signed for Aston Villa back in 2018, making the switch from Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership.
Back then, Villa were competing in the Championship, which perhaps made the bedding-in period a little easier for McGinn, but after playing a part in the Villans' return to the top division, making the step up to the Premier League was not a problem for the midfielder, either.
Throughout his time at the club, McGinn has been one of the club's most consistent players, even despite playing in multiple different positions, which naturally made the Villa fans fall in love with him.
His latest contract extension, penned in November, will have only strengthened their admiration of the wily player, who is now in line to reach 10 years at the club in 2028.
At the present time, though, Villa's fanbase are having to make do without seeing one of their favourite players on the pitch courtesy of the knee injury that he sustained against Everton in January. However, there is hope that the 31-year-old will be in a position to return before the end of 2025-26.
The John McGinn chant has rung around Villa Park for several seasons now, and if you want to know more about the chant, including the lyrics and tune, then we have got you covered below.
John McGinn chant lyrics and tune
The John McGinn chant is sung to the tune of a widely used football chant, which many clubs use. The lyrics are as follows:
We've got McGinn. Super John McGinn,
I just don't think you understand,
He's Unai Emery's man, he's better than Zidane,
We've got super John McGinn
John McGinn chant background
This song was created for McGinn shortly after he signed for the club, thanks to his impressive performances in the Championship. Therefore, the chant has gone through some minor lyrical changes over the years.
The first iteration of the chant used the line ‘he's Steve Bruce's man', before it was then switched to ‘Dean Smith's man' and ‘Steven Gerrard's man'. The latest and current version of the chant uses Unai Emery's name, Aston Villa's current manager.
The important part of the song to note is the Zidane reference. Now, Aston Villa fans do not actually think that McGinn is a better footballer than Zidane, but it is a testament to how highly rated and well-liked he is among the club's supporters.
The chant is also used by Scotland fans, who switch the lyrics to ‘Stevie Clarke's man'.
