Balaidos Stadium redevelopment continues to accelerate as Vigo steps up 2030 World Cup push

Celta Vigo's long-running Balaidos redevelopment is gathering momentum as the club edges closer to completing the final phase of the project.

With FIFA expected to confirm the 2030 World Cup host venues in September, Vigo officials believe the modernised stadium is well placed to secure its place on the final list.

Work on the Estadio de Balaidos continues to advance at a strong pace, with the new Gol Stand moving closer to completion ahead of its full reopening later this year.

According to Vigo mayor Abel Caballero, the redevelopment remains on schedule, with the second of 16 steel roof support sections due to be lifted into place this week. Six sections will form the front of the roof, with the remaining 10 positioned at the rear.

The completed Gol Stand will add around 7,000 seats and increase Balaídos' overall capacity to approximately 31,000 by the end of 2026.

For the start of the new season, 791 permanent seats are already installed, representing a small increase on last year's temporary seating arrangement.

Away from the visible structural work, contractors are also completing paving, masonry, carpentry and major drainage improvements inside the stadium.

The upgraded drainage network has become a priority after damage following a 2023 Guns N' Roses concert led to significant pitch issues and forced Celta Vigo to replace the playing surface at a reported cost of €1 million (£750k).

Caballero also reiterated his confidence that Balaídos deserves to host matches at the 2030 World Cup, claiming the stadium is “better than many candidate stadiums” and insisting Vigo remains on course to receive FIFA's expected approval in September.

After almost a decade of phased redevelopment, Balaídos finally feels as though it is entering the home straight.

With the Gol Stand taking shape and important infrastructure work progressing behind the scenes, the stadium is becoming increasingly ready for both domestic football and the demands of a potential World Cup.

If FIFA gives Vigo the green light in September, the city will still have further work to complete ahead of 2030, but the current pace of construction suggests Balaídos is well positioned to meet that challenge.
