SS Lazio’s long-running plans to redevelop the historic Stadio Flaminio have moved a step closer after local officials confirmed the project documentation is now considered complete.
The ambitious proposal would transform the famous Rome venue into a modern multi-purpose stadium and entertainment complex worth around €480 million (£416m).
Lazio's Flaminio Stadium project moves closer to green light
Rome councillor for sport and major events Alessandro Onorato has confirmed Lazio’s redevelopment proposal for the Stadio Flaminio is now heading towards a crucial approval phase.
Speaking during an event at Piazza di Siena, Onorato said the documentation submitted by the club is “complete” and revealed a conference involving the relevant authorities will take place in the coming days to determine whether the project is technically compatible.
The redevelopment plans go far beyond simply modernising the stadium for football.
Lazio want to move away from the Stadio Olimpico, which they share with arch-rivals AS Roma, and make the Flaminio a year-round sports and entertainment destination capable of generating major revenue outside matchdays.

Under the proposal, existing facilities, including sports halls, gyms and the swimming pool, would be replaced with hospitality areas, VIP boxes, restaurants, club shops and event spaces. The club also plans to host concerts and large-scale music events, which are expected to become a major financial driver behind the project.
According to submitted plans, Lazio believe the revamped stadium could generate more than €37 million (£32m) annually, with much of that income coming from premium seating and non-football activity.
The project is expected to cost around £416 million in total, with funding coming largely through private investment and bank loans, while public money would help fund surrounding infrastructure works. Lazio are also seeking a 90-year concession to operate the city-owned stadium.
FGG says: A huge moment for Lazio and for the city of Rome
This feels like one of the biggest steps forward the Flaminio project has taken so far, and it underlines just how serious Lazio are about finally creating a modern long-term home of their own.
The key now will be whether the project can successfully navigate the political and technical approval stages that so often slow down major stadium developments in Italy.
But if completed, the redevelopment could breathe new life into one of Rome’s most historic venues while giving Lazio their own kind of modern multi-use stadium many of Europe’s top clubs already rely on financially.
