Gillingham’s preparations for Saturday’s League Two clash with Tranmere Rovers have suffered an unusual setback after a fox caused significant damage to the Priestfield Stadium pitch.
The animal managed to get onto the playing surface overnight, leaving a sizeable section of turf dug up inside the Rainham End goalmouth.

Gillingham head groundsman Haydn Lawrance shared images showing a large chunk of the Rainham End goalmouth damaged after a fox reportedly entered the stadium during the night.
The incident has caused frustration for the ground staff, particularly after significant work was carried out on the pitch during the summer.
Lawrance summed up his feelings simply with the caption: “Honestly… give me a break.”
Priestfield, which can accommodate 11,582 spectators, is currently the seventh-largest stadium in League Two.
It has also previously had an unwanted visitor, with a fox spotted inside the ground’s temporary away stand during Gillingham’s win over Morecambe in September 2023.
Fans were quick to joke about the latest incident, with supporters referencing the classic “fox in the box” phrase. Lawrance responded: “Not the one we were hoping for unfortunately!”
The Gills will now hope the damage can be repaired before welcoming Tranmere, who are fourth and unbeaten after five league games.

After putting plenty of effort into getting the Priestfield pitch ready for the new season, Gillingham’s ground staff have been given another job to do thanks to an unexpected four-legged visitor.
The timing is particularly frustrating with Tranmere coming to town, but hopefully the damage can be repaired without affecting Saturday’s game.
