Leeds United forward Lukas Nmecha believes the club could eventually need an even bigger stadium than the ongoing expansion of Elland Road.

The Germany international also hopes the redevelopment will preserve the atmosphere that makes the ground such a special place for supporters.

What did Lukas Nmecha say about Elland Road's expansion plans?

Elland Road currently has a capacity of 37,645, but Leeds are planning a phased redevelopment of the West Stand to increase the size of their home.

The proposals aim to take capacity to approximately 48,000 by 2028, before reaching around 53,000 by 2030, with the longer-term ambition often discussed as a 55,000-seat stadium.

Speaking on the Official Leeds United Podcast on November 4th, Nmecha was asked about the prospect of playing in front of a significantly larger crowd, with former Whites manager Simon Grayson joking that he might need to sign a new contract to experience it.

The 27-year-old, whose current two-year deal expires at the end of the season, responded by highlighting the importance of retaining the atmosphere at Elland Road.

“I hope and believe the atmosphere will be the same. That's always the worrying thing,” Nmecha said.

However, the striker also suggested that even a 55,000-capacity ground might not satisfy the demand from Leeds supporters.

“For the amount of fans we have, 55,000 isn't that big. It could be even bigger,” he added.

The scale of that demand is reflected by the club's season-ticket waiting list, which currently has more than 26,000 supporters registered.

Joining costs £10 per person, while estimates suggest some fans could wait more than eight years for an opportunity to secure a season ticket.

Nmecha's comments underline the enormous support Leeds have behind them, with the waiting list highlighting the demand for regular matchday tickets.

Reaching 55,000 would already represent a significant improvement, but there is a strong argument that the club could eventually fill an even larger stadium.

The challenge will be ensuring that increased capacity does not come at the expense of Elland Road's intimidating atmosphere, which is one of the ground's defining features.
