Man arrested for climbing on roof of stadium during Euro 2024 match

A man was arrested during the Euro 2024 match between Germany and Denmark for climbing onto the roof of the stadium. The game took place at Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, with the Germans winning 2-0.

21-year-old man arrested during Euro 2024 match

The man was 21 years old and from Osnabruck, located in north-west Germany. He was seen carrying a backpack, which had a camera inside. He was seen by Dortmund police during the start of the second half, which was delayed due to a lightning storm. The police said, “at no point was there any danger to other people in the stadium”. At 11:44pm, he was arrested by German special forces.

‘Wanted to take good photos’ – Dortmund police release statement

In a statement by the Dortmund police, they said: “A 21-year-old man from Osnabrück climbed onto the roof of the BVB stadium in Dortmund during the Germany – Denmark match in the round of 16 of UEFA EURO 2024 on Saturday (29 June 2024). Dortmund police officers arrested the man.

“According to initial findings, the 21-year-old wanted to take photos on the roof of the stadium, as he had done elsewhere in Germany. He was carrying camera equipment in a backpack. At no point was there any danger to other people in the stadium. The Dortmund police are currently ruling out a political motivation.

They added: “Initial investigations revealed that the man had already wanted to take photos of prominent buildings at great heights in Herne in April 2022 and in Ulm in May 2024. As is now the case in Dortmund, criminal proceedings are underway. During questioning by the criminal police on Sunday night, the man from Osnabrück stated that he only wanted to take “good photos”.

The Dortmund police are now fully investigating how the man was able to get into Signa Iduna Park.
