It is difficult to overstate the heights that Mo Salah reached during his record-breaking nine-year career with Liverpool, and now that he has called time on his Anfield career, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the legendary Mo Salah chant.
When the winger arrived from Roma in the summer of 2017, many rival fans questioned the transfer due to his failed stint at Chelsea, but a debut goal against Watford set the tone for what was to follow.
Salah scored a staggering 257 goals and provided 123 assists for his teammates across 442 matches for Liverpool, a tally that saw him become the player with the most goal contributions for a single club in the history of the Premier League – breaking Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney's record.
The 34-year-old won the top-flight title for a second time in 2024-25, thanks in large part to his output of 29 goals and 18 assists in the league (the most contributions by one player in a single campaign), but after a difficult few months on that pitch that coincided with a falling out with then-manager Arne Slot, he agreed to terminate his contract at the end of 2025-26.
Now that the winger is officially a free agent, Football Ground Guide covers all you need to know about the Mo Salah chant, including its lyrics, tune and origin.

Mo Salah chant lyrics and tune
The Mo Salah chant is sung to the tune of ‘Sit Down' by James, and the lyrics are as follows:
Mo Salah,
Mo Salah,
Mo Salah, running down the wing,
Salah, la, la, la,
The Egyptian King!
Mo Salah, Mo Salah, Mo Salah running down the wing! Salah, la, la, la, the Egyptian King!
Mo Salah chant back story
The Mo Salah ‘Egyptian King' chant was first sung around midway through the 2017/18 season, when it became clear Liverpool had a special player on their hands. The song was the backdrop to the club's surprise run to the 2018 Champions League final, which ultimately ended in disappointment at the hands of Real Madrid.
The tune choice of ‘Sit Down' was a controversial selection at the time due to the fact that the band who sing ‘Sit Down' are Manchester-born and bred. Additionally, the song was frequently played at Old Trafford before matches and at half-time and remains the song that many Man Utd fans associate with their 1991 Cup Winners' Cup Final triumph in Rotterdam.

FGG says: An iconic chant
While the song ‘Sit Down' remains one with affinities to their biggest rivals, Man Utd, Liverpool's reworking of the song for Mo Salah is unquestionably now an iconic British football chant.
Liverpool fans know all too well about other fans (Arsenal) nabbing their chants, but this one has reached the level where nobody would surely be as brazen as to do that.
