Fans call for Richardson return as ITV announce deal to show Serie A matches

ITV announced yesterday that they will air Serie A matches until the end of the season. Fans on social media were quick to demand that James Richardson be named as the presenter for the games.

ITV to show remaining Serie A matches

On Friday, April 5, ITV posted the following statement on X.com (formerly Twitter): “ITVX will show live Serie A games free to air from this weekend until the end of the season in a new deal announced today.” ITV will broadcast one match every Saturday evening beginning from this weekend where Empoli will host Torino.

The majority of Serie A only have eight matches to play in the current season, with Inter Milan leading their city rivals’ AC Milan by 14 points at the top of the table.

Richardson and Gazetta Football Italia

Richardson is currently well-known for hosting the UEFA Champions League Goals Show on TNT Sports. However, when Italian football was at the peak of the European game, Richardson anchored the British coverage of the league on Channel 4 from 1992 to 2002.

Many fans will remember Richardson sitting in a café with an Italian newspaper in one hand and a coffee in the other while he read out the main headlines from various Italian papers. This show took place on Saturday mornings and was called Gazzetta Football Italia. The following day would usually be live coverage of a selected fixture in Serie A.

Fans demand Richardson return

Over on X.com, fans were keen on seeing Richardson return in a presenter role for the Serie A matches on ITV. @mike_rosario87 said: “More of James Richardson”, with an iconic shot of Richardson sitting down with a copy of La Gazzetta dello Sport. Another fan said: “They gotta get James Richardson to do the presenting.”

@SteH1981 added: “Campinato, di Calcio, italiano..no no..gooooolazzo!” Needs James Richardson presenting from a café or I’m not watching.”
