Arsenal are on the brink of their first Champions League final since 2006, with Atletico Madrid now the only team separating the Gunners and a date in Budapest with either Bayern Munich or PSG on Saturday, 30 May.

The first leg of the semi-final will take place at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Wednesday, 29 April, and more than 4,000 Arsenal fans are expected to make the trip over to Madrid to see if their team can bring an advantage with them back to London.

If you are attending the match at the Metropolitano, here is everything you need to know about the Atletico Madrid away end and an away day in Madrid.

What is Madrid like for away fans?

Madrid is a city that lends itself perfectly for a European away day. The city possesses a plethora of accommodation options, an excellent metro system, and a perfect blend of the old and the new.

You will find pubs, bars and restaurants around almost every corner in the city centre, but the main hub for away fans more often than not is Plaza Mayor. This giant square in the city is packed with outdoor bars, providing supporters with the perfect spot for day drinks and tapas in the sun before kick-off.

Madrid locals are friendly enough, provided you are respectful. If you act in a confrontational way, though, then expect the same back.

One thing that Arsenal fans need to be aware of is that the Riyadh Air Metropolitano is located 11km away from the city centre, so some planning is required beforehand with respect to the city's metro system (more on this shortly).

Where to drink for Arsenal fans in Madrid?

Away from Plaza Mayor, the following bars are well worth checking out in Madrid:

  • Bad Company 1920 – C de Miguel Moya 8, Puerta de Madera, 1920, 28004 Madrid
  • Salmon Guru – Calle de Echegaray, 21, Centro, 28014 Madrid, Spain
  • Beer Station – Cuesta de Sto. Domingo, 22, Centro, 28013 Madrid, Spain

What will the Atletico Madrid away section be like for Arsenal fans?

As is so often the case at European stadiums, the away section at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano is up in the gods. Specifically, it is located at the very top of the North Stand at one end of the stadium. Arsenal fans will take up blocks 313-315 and 413-416.

The view from up here isn't all that bad, though. The North Stand is relatively steep for a modern stadium, so Arsenal fans won't feel completely disconnected from the action on the pitch, particularly when the action is down at that end.

Arsenal fans can expect segregation on either side of the away section and in front, while protective netting will also be in place.

How many Arsenal fans are going to Madrid

Arsenal fans have been given 3,476 tickets for the match, and it is anticipated that all of these will be sold to Platinum, Gold & Travel Club Members. It is not out of the question that more Arsenal fans will travel over to Madrid without tickets, particularly as it is one of the biggest matches in the club's history.

How Arsenal fans can get to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano

As touched upon earlier, the Riyadh Air Metropolitano is located 11km away from the city centre, so walking to the ground isn't an option. Instead, fans should find a metro station in the city centre and board a metro on line 7 to the Estadio Metropolitano Station, which is located right next to the stadium.
