The future of one of English sport's much-maligned shared stadiums has taken another twist after multiple parties formally expressed an interest in taking over operations at The Shay.

It comes just months after plans to sell the Halifax venue collapsed following widespread opposition from supporters and campaigners.

Potential suitors submit bid to buy Shay Stadium

According to the BBC, three organisations have submitted expressions of interest to operate Halifax's Shay Stadium, with Calderdale Council now set to carry out a full review before deciding the venue's long-term future.

The stadium, which is home to both FC Halifax Town and Halifax Panthers, had been due to be sold earlier this year to Huddersfield Giants owner Ken Davy as part of the council's efforts to balance its finances.

However, that proposed sale collapsed after criticism from supporters and campaigners, prompting the council to reopen the process.

Among the interested parties are local property consultants Stewart and Beverly Charnock-Bates, who have proposed transferring The Shay into community ownership through a not-for-profit organisation with professional management.

Roxor Group owner Tony Wood has also submitted a bid centred around the creation of a community trust to operate the stadium, while a consortium of Halifax Panthers directors has proposed working alongside other local stakeholders to oversee the venue.

Calderdale Council has confirmed all three proposals will now undergo a detailed evaluation before Cabinet considers its preferred option in October.

Alongside the bidding process, councillors have also established a dedicated task group to conduct a full review of how The Shay operates, with external investment expected to form part of any long-term solution aimed at making the stadium financially sustainable.

Cabinet member Mike Payne stressed there are currently no plans for the council to walk away from operating the venue, but admitted its present financial model is no longer viable without additional funding.

FGG says: Community ownership remains a popular solution

The collapse of the original sale has effectively reopened the conversation around The Shay's future, and it's encouraging to see multiple groups now putting forward fresh ideas rather than the stadium's future being left in limbo.

With all three bids involving varying degrees of community involvement, there appears to be a genuine desire to keep the venue at the heart of Halifax sport.

There's still plenty of work to do before a preferred bidder is chosen in October, but after months of uncertainty, this at least represents positive movement.

The hope for supporters of both the Shaymen and Halifax Panthers will be that the review ultimately delivers a financially sustainable future while preserving one of the country's most iconic shared stadiums.
