Mexico's dream run on home soil continued on Tuesday night as El Tri booked their place in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup with another impressive victory in front of a raucous Estadio Azteca crowd.

The celebrations quickly spilled onto the streets of Mexico City, where thousands of supporters marked another famous night that could yet set up a blockbuster meeting with England.

Mexico fans wildly celebrate Round of 32 win over Ecuador

Mexico supporters erupted into celebration across Mexico City after Javier Aguirre's side secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ecuador to reach the World Cup last 16.

‘Breathtaking' footage shared by FOX Sports showed huge crowds gathering around the Angel de la Independencia, with supporters waving flags, singing and celebrating long into the night following another memorable victory for the tournament co-hosts.

Goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez put Mexico in control before a composed second-half display sealed the nation's first World Cup knockout victory since 1986.

The reward is another match at the iconic Azteca, where Mexico will face either England or DR Congo in the last 16.

Should the Three Lions overcome the Leopards at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, it would set up one of the standout ties of the tournament between two of the World Cup's biggest footballing nations.

The scenes in Mexico City are exactly what FIFA would have hoped to see from a home World Cup.

From the packed streets around the Angel de la Independencia to the electric atmosphere inside the Estadio Azteca, El Tri supporters have embraced every moment of the tournament.

If England can overcome DR Congo, a last-16 meeting at one of football's most iconic stadiums would be a spectacular occasion and arguably the biggest tie of the competition so far.
