The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in the competition's history, with 48 nations set to descend on Canada, Mexico and the USA.

The newly expanded tournament will begin with Thursday's opening game between Mexico and South Africa and conclude with the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19.

However, the build-up to the tournament has not been without controversy, including the topic of FIFA's ticket pricing strategy that has deterred some supporters from making the trip to North America.

For those watching from Portugal, all the focus will be on whether Cristiano Ronaldo can lift the trophy in his sixth and final World Cup appearance.

Here, Football Ground Guide provides an overview of how to watch the World Cup in Portugal, whether you are cheering on Roberto Martinez's charges or just find yourself in the country during the tournament.

Where to watch the 2026 World Cup in Portugal

Portugal is a football-mad nation that will be hoping to see their country claim football's biggest prize, ten years after they lifted the European Championship in France.

As the country's two biggest cities, Lisbon and Porto, will likely be the biggest hotspots to watch the tournament over the next six weeks.

There are also a number of Portuguese TV channels that have the rights to show the action from North America, albeit not all games will be broadcast on free-to-air TV.

Lisbon

Lisbon's iconic square, Terreiro do Paco, will be turned into a fan park for the tournament. There will be a giant screen that will broadcast up to two games daily. The fan park is free to visit and will feature food areas and other entertainment.

Porto

In Porto, the Adega Sports Bar and Cervejaria Gulden Draak Bierhuis should be good spots to catch the action during the tournament.

Madeira

There is arguably no better place to watch Portugal in action than from the birthplace of Ronaldo, the Island of Madeira. Bars like Hole in One, Moynihan's Irish Bar, and FX Restaurant & Sports Bar should all be showing games from the tournament.

What TV channels and streaming platforms are showing the World Cup in Portugal?

Several Portuguese TV channels have rights to show matches from the 2026 World Cup, although Sport TV is the only platform that will broadcast every game.

Sport TV is a premium sports broadcaster that offers a variety of subscription plans, starting from around €25.99 and going up to €34.99.

In regard to free-to-air options, RTP, SIC and TVI are set to broadcast games after recently reaching an agreement with FIFA. However, only 20 matches will be shown as part of the deal, although it is said to include all games involving Portugal.
