The 2026 FIFA World Cup has showcased some of the finest stadiums ever assembled for a football tournament, but former England midfielder Danny Murphy believes one iconic venue has been eclipsed.
While Mexico City's Estadio Azteca remains one of world football's most historic grounds, Murphy ranked Seattle Stadium as his favourite host venue after visiting several stadiums during the tournament, with Los Angeles completing his top three.
Seattle has earned widespread praise throughout the World Cup thanks to its downtown location and vibrant matchday atmosphere, while the Azteca has once again reminded supporters why it remains one of football's most iconic stadiums despite its ageing infrastructure.
Danny Murphy names his favourite World Cup stadium
Murphy believes Seattle Stadium offers the complete package for supporters, combining atmosphere, location and design better than any other venue he has visited during the tournament.
“It's number one because it's unique. It's right in the city centre, which creates a buzz in itself,” Murphy told FootballGroundGuide.
“They've got this iconic stand behind one of the goals that's designed to preserve views of the city, which is incredible.
“The atmosphere was brilliant, the stadium was full, we had some wonderful games there and the people absolutely loved the football.”
Seattle Stadium has hosted six World Cup matches this summer and has been widely praised by supporters and journalists alike for its accessibility, lively surrounding neighbourhoods and distinctive architecture.
Murphy placed Estadio Azteca second, insisting its rich history makes it unlike any other venue despite some obvious shortcomings.
“It's got this unique feeling because it's so historic. You feel like you're part of something special.
“It's old-school Mexico around the stadium – not modern fan parks and huge car parks, just this wonderful chaos.
“The outside still looks historic and rustic, almost as if it's falling apart in places. There are leaking roofs, no lifts and endless stairs. But once you're inside, it's incredible. The Mexicans are crazy about football and the atmosphere was special. A genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Los Angeles completes Murphy's top three
Murphy rounded off his rankings by selecting Los Angeles Stadium, describing it as one of the most visually impressive sporting venues he has ever experienced.
“I'd go with LA third. It's just a wow stadium.
“The outside is stunning with water features and greenery everywhere, and inside you've got this huge cinematic screen hanging from the roof.
“It's one of those stadiums that leaves you speechless.”
Los Angeles Stadium has become one of the standout venues of the tournament, combining state-of-the-art facilities with one of the most technologically advanced spectator experiences in world sport.
Murphy's rankings differ from some recent fan and media surveys, several of which have highlighted Estadio Azteca in Mexico City as the undisputed top venue for atmosphere.
Other fan favorites for peak crowd energy and design also include Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Seattle's Lumen Field.

FGG says: History does not always beat modern stadiums
Estadio Azteca will always occupy a special place in football history, having staged two World Cup finals and countless iconic matches. However, Murphy's rankings demonstrate that the overall supporter experience extends beyond heritage alone.
Seattle's city-centre location, accessibility and electric atmosphere have made it one of the tournament's biggest success stories, proving that a modern stadium can still create unforgettable football memories.
