Liverpool have had one of the biggest and loudest fan bases in English football since the Bill Shankly era in the 1960s.

While their most famous anthem is widely accepted to be ‘You'll Never Walk Alone', match-going Reds have also sung countless other chants over the years.

None have stood the test of time better than ‘Poor Scouser Tommy', though, which has now been sung at Anfield for more than 60 years.

For all the key information on this Liverpool chant, including the lyrics and the story behind it, we have you covered below.

Poor Scouser Tommy chant, lyrics and tune

The tune of the Poor Scouser Tommy chant is inspired by old folk songs, such as ‘Red River Ralley' and ‘The Sash'. The lyrics to the main part of the song are as follows:

Oh, I am a Liverpudlian, I come from the Spion Kop,

I like to sing, I like to shout, I go there quite a lot,

We support a team that plays in red, a team that we all know,

A team that we called Liverpool, to glory we will go,

We've won the league, we've won the cup, and we've been to Europe too,

We played the Toffees for the laugh, we left them feeling blue

The Poor Scouser Tommy chant is inspired by an old tale from World War Two about a young man from Liverpool who died in battle.

According to the story, the young man's final words before perishing were, ‘I am a Liverpudlian', and the Liverpool faithful have taken this and turned it into a mammoth song that is often sung in full during European away trips.

The extended version of the chant, which was created some years later when Ian Rush was playing up front for the Reds, features a reference to Liverpool's 5-0 win over their city rivals Everton in 1982.

In more recent times, famous Liverpudlian singer Jamie Webster has adopted the song.

FGG says: An iconic chant

This is one of those iconic British football chants that most fans will only know snippets of. In many ways, knowing the full version of the chant is a Liverpool fan litmus test, particularly for those who go abroad to watch their beloved team.
