Man City and Liverpool played out one of the biggest Premier League matches of the season on Sunday afternoon, and it was a day to remember for the hosts at the Etihad Stadium.
The Cityzens ran out as 3-0 winners and moved into second place in the Premier League table, four points behind the current leaders, Arsenal. While City's performance was certainly eye-catching on the pitch, several fans watching at home also picked up on a Man City chant aimed at Florian Wirtz.
Man City target Florian Wirtz with damning chant
Wirtz, who signed for Liverpool in the summer for £116.5m, has endured a torrid start to his career on Merseyside and has yet to register a goal or assist in the Premier League.
The former Bayer Leverkusen man had another afternoon to forget on Sunday, and after he was substituted off late in the second half, he was greeted with sarcastic cheers from the home crowd and a rendition of ‘What a Waste of Money'.
It isn't the first time this season that the German has been the subject of these chants. Brentford fans gave him a similar reception during their match against Liverpool in the middle of October, and his form has got to be a major concern for Arne Slot now.
Is Wirtz's form letting other players off the hook?
While Wirtz has unquestionably had a poor start to his Liverpool career, he isn't the only Reds player to be underperforming this season. Virgil van Dijk had another poor afternoon at the Etihad Stadium, while Mo Salah missed a couple of good chances to get Liverpool back into the game in the second half.
Even Hugo Ekitike, who also cost Liverpool a hefty transfer fee, has gone off the boil. The former Frankfurt striker has scored just one goal in his last nine Premier League appearances.
FGG says: There can be no arguments
At this moment in time, it's difficult to argue that Florian Wirtz isn't a ‘waste of money', as City fans claimed on Sunday. Liverpool legend Graeme Souness once claimed that a £100m player should register four assists a game, so it would be particularly fascinating to hear what he has made of Wirtz's start to the season.
