Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta took some time to settle with the Eagles, but he has established himself as a consistent threat to defences up and down the country in recent seasons.
Chipping in with 16 Premier League goals in 2023/24, 14 in 2024/25, and already eight so far in 2025/26, the Frenchman has also become a fan-favourite at Selhurst Park.
As a result, the Palace faithful have created a catchy football chant for Mateta, and they make the most of every opportunity to belt it out in the Holmesdale Road Stand as well as on away trips.
Read on as Football Ground Guide covers all the key information on the Jean-Philippe Mateta chant, including its lyrics, tune and background.
Jean-Phillippe Mateta chant lyrics and tune
The Jean-Phillippe Mateta chant is sung to the tune of ‘Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!' by the Venga Boys. The lyrics are as follows:
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!
Mateta's in the room,
There ain't no striker better than Jean-Phillippe Mateta!

Jean-Phillippe Mateta chant background
The Jean-Phillippe Mateta chant first began to surface towards the end of the 2022/23 season, when Mateta seemingly came to life out of nowhere in a Crystal Palace shirt.
After struggling for the majority of the previous year, Mateta ended the season with a flurry of goals, which prompted the Palace fans to create this chant for him.
Given his name, there were some fans who felt that the natural tune for a Mateta chant would be ‘Hakuna Matata' from The Lion King, but the Palace fans ultimately landed on Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom, which, to be fair, probably works better for a football chant.

FGG says: There's still time for Hakuna Mateta
Taking absolutely nothing away from this chant, because it is both unique and catchy, but it does feel like an opportunity is being missed with respect to Mateta's name and Hakuna Matata. Coming up with football-related lyrics to fit into the Lion King hit is someone else's job, though.
