Supporters travelling across North America for the 2026 World Cup are being encouraged to think carefully before loading up on stadium food, with one nutrition expert offering simple tips to avoid some of the less healthy options available.

With fans expected to spend long days in host cities and stadiums during the tournament, the advice focuses on making small adjustments rather than completely avoiding matchday treats.

Health expert provides advice for fans heading to the 2026 World Cup

Speaking to The Sun, sports dietitian Roxana Ehsani highlighted three questions supporters should ask themselves before opting for what has been described as ‘nasty’ stadium food at some of this summer’s World Cup venues.

The first is whether a fried option can be replaced with a grilled, baked or air-fried alternative, helping reduce grease and fat without dramatically changing the meal itself.

Secondly, fans are encouraged to ask whether whole-wheat bread, pizza dough or other higher-fibre alternatives are available instead of more refined options.

Finally, Ehsani recommends adding extra vegetables wherever possible, whether that means loading up a sandwich, adding toppings to a pizza or choosing meals that include more fresh produce.

She also suggested eating a filling meal before heading to stadiums, with protein-rich and high-fibre foods helping supporters avoid relying solely on expensive matchday catering.

The advice comes as fans prepare to visit venues across the United States, Canada and Mexico, where food offerings are expected to range from traditional stadium favourites to local specialities unique to each host city.

FGG says: The World Cup is still about enjoying the experience

There's absolutely nothing wrong with trying to make healthier choices during a month-long tournament, particularly given the amount of travelling many supporters will be doing.

But equally, for most fans, a World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

If you're watching England at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Scotland at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami or another nation elsewhere across North America, most supporters aren't going to spend the day worrying about whether their pizza base is whole wheat.

The reality is, people can do as they please. Some will happily seek out healthier options, while others will want to sample the local food, stadium snacks and everything else that comes with travelling to a major tournament – and if that sounds like you, then be sure to check out our guide to the best foods fans must try across the three host nations.

As long as fans stay hydrated, look after themselves in the summer heat and enjoy the experience, that's probably the most important thing of all.

And if you’re gearing up for the tournament, you can also check out our guide to the best football World Cup betting sites to get fully prepared.
