Bologna are entering a decisive period in their bid to build a new stadium and secure a place among Italy’s Euro 2032 host venues.

The Serie A club and BolognaFiere must submit crucial project and financing documents to the FIGC by September 30th, with around €300 million (£258m) required for the scheme.

Bologna's final preparations for new stadium in time for Euro 2032 bid

Final preparations are underway for the proposed new stadium at the BolognaFiere site, which would provide an alternative to the repeatedly delayed redevelopment of Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

The deadline later this month requires Bologna and BolognaFiere to submit the project and infrastructure documentation to the FIGC, with the financing plan expected to be one of the most important elements.

The current financial model is based on an investment of around £258m, with club owner Joey Saputo and BolognaFiere each expected to contribute around €50m (£43m).

Private investors could also become involved, while the city, Emilia-Romagna region and chamber of commerce may provide support. Bologna is also hoping for €30m (£26m) in government funding, with the remainder potentially covered through debt financing.

The stadium is planned as a multi-purpose venue capable of hosting football, concerts and other events linked to BolognaFiere.

Options under consideration include partial or full roof coverage, while a retractable pitch has also been discussed, although that would significantly increase costs.

Under the current timetable, construction would begin in 2027, with the stadium needing to be completed at least a year before Euro 2032.

FGG says: Bologna must seize chance to deliver new stadium and Euro 2032 venue

This feels like a hugely important moment for Bologna.

The Dall’Ara redevelopment has been delayed repeatedly, so having a fresh project that could actually move quicker is an opportunity the club cannot afford to waste.

The financing still needs to be nailed down, but the multi-purpose approach makes plenty of sense and could give Bologna a stadium that works throughout the year rather than simply on matchdays.

Euro 2032 gives the project a genuine deadline and a reason to push forward.
