With the 2025/26 League One fixture release only hours away, next season's match attendance in the third tier of English football will be the next subject of sharp scrutiny. It begs the question: Which team will lead the attendance charts as soon as the new season kicks off?
Last season, Birmingham City recorded the best average attendance in home matches. With Blues now set to ply their trade in the Championship next season, no doubt a massive turnout every matchday at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park played a crucial role in their promotion race.
Wrexham, a team that also earned promotion to the Championship, recorded the fifth-highest League One average attendance. Charlton, another promoted side set for a 2025/26 campaign in the Championship, had the fourth-best average, further reinforcing the significance of supporters in every home game. Interestingly, Birmingham and Wrexham had the best home performances in that order, while Charlton came fourth once again.
Doncaster Rovers, Port Vale, Bradford and AFC Wimbledon join League One from League Two.
Relegated Championship sides Luton, Plymouth and Cardiff also join League One. Of these three, Luton had the worst average in match attendance last season, having finished third-worst overall. Will the Hatters do better in League One? Find out in our weekly review of League One match attendance.

Highest-ever League One attendance
The highest attendance at a League One match came on Boxing Day in 2018. Sunderland hosted Bradford City at the Stadium of Light, with 46,039 fans at the ground. Aiden McGeady scored the only goal of the game, and this attendance figure is yet to be beaten in the third tier of English football.
