Camp Nou set for most 2030 World Cup matches – but one key factor rules it out of hosting final

Barcelona's revamped Camp Nou is expected to stage more matches than any other stadium at the 2030 World Cup.

However, the final itself is still set to be played elsewhere, with Real Madrid's Bernabeu still the leading candidate.

The redeveloped Camp Nou is expected to host the highest number of matches at the 2030 World Cup, but current plans point towards the Bernabeu staging the final.

According to Spanish journalist Anton Meana, the Spanish Football Federation views Real Madrid's iconic home as the preferred venue for the tournament's showpiece match, while Camp Nou will shoulder the biggest workload across the competition.

The Bernabeu's cutting-edge redevelopment, retractable roof and status as one of world football's most advanced stadiums are understood to make it FIFA's preferred choice for the final.

There are still issues to resolve, however.

Concerns remain over fan zone arrangements around the stadium, with noise complaints from local residents potentially limiting the space available for tournament activities.

Camp Nou, meanwhile, is expected to benefit from its huge capacity, making it the natural choice to host the greatest number of fixtures if FIFA proceeds with plans to expand the tournament from 48 to 64 teams.

Elsewhere, the fellow Madrid venue, Riyadh Air Metropolitano, is also expected to be among Spain's host venues, although its busy concert schedule has complicated planning discussions.

Athletic Bilbao's San Mames is also expected to be included, while Anoeta Stadium‘s place remains less certain because of capacity concerns.

Hosting the most matches is a major achievement for Camp Nou, but that does not necessarily make it the best venue for the final.

As the 2026 World Cup showed, the busiest stadium and the showpiece venue do not always have to be the same.

Unlike the decision to stage the 2026 final at MetLife Stadium despite AT&T Stadium hosting nine matches, there is a far stronger footballing case for the Bernabeu.

Following its remarkable transformation, it feels a fitting stage for the biggest match in world football.
