Cheapest matchday options in England

In England, it's easy to get bogged down by the price of attending football matches, particularly those in the Premier League. However, at the same time, it's important to acknowledge that there are still plenty of reasonably-priced options across the country if you look hard enough.

Naturally, the lower down the football pyramid you go, the cheaper the tickets you will find. This is due to a number of factors, but most importantly due to the fact that the level of football on show decreases the further down the pyramid you go, as do the facilities at the stadiums.

In this article, we are going to look at the cheapest matchday options in England from the Premier League through to non-league.

Cheapest matchday options in England – by league

Premier League

The cheapest matchday tickets in the Premier League can be found at Molineux. The Wolves board have come under fire from supporters this season, but matchgoing fans can hardly be angry at them over ticket prices.

The cheapest adult ticket at Molineux this season is priced at £26.50, which is considerably cheaper than the most expensive ticket at the stadium, which is priced at £71.

It's fair to say that this won't be the cheapest ticket in the Premier League for much longer, though, as Wolves are almost certainly going to be playing their football in the Championship during the 2026/27 campaign.

Championship

The prize for the cheapest matchday ticket in the Championship goes to three clubs – Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Stoke City.

All three of these clubs offer adult matchday tickets for as little as £20, which is more than reasonable for matches in the second tier of English football.

Despite the low ticket prices, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City both struggle to sell out their respective stadiums, Ewood Park and the Bet365 Stadium, on a regular basis.

Derby County, on the other hand, have one of the highest average attendances in the division, so they arguably don't NEED to offer such cheap tickets.

League One

The cheapest tickets in League One can be purchased at the DW Stadium for Wigan Athletic's home matches. Adult tickets in the South Stand for category C matches can be purchased for as little as £18, making it the first ticket on the list to break the £20 barrier.

Like some of the other clubs we've already mentioned, Wigan Athletic struggle to even come close to selling out the DW Stadium these days. In fact, this was even the case back when the Latics were a Premier League outfit.

The reason for this simply cannot be put down to high ticket prices, but rather the fact that Wigan is traditionally a Rugby League town rather than a football one.

League Two

The cheapest matchday tickets in League Two can be purchased for matches at the Peninsula Stadium, the home of Salford City.

The club, which is part-owned by Gary Neville and David Beckham, are offering £17 tickets for category B fixtures in the West Stand terrace. While these tickets don't come with an awful lot of comfort, you can't really argue for a day out at the football.

Given that the stadium is located relatively close to Manchester City Centre, it is also a good one to get tickets for as an away fan.

National League

Perhaps surprisingly, the cheapest matchday ticket in the National League costs the same as the cheapest matchday ticket in League Two (£17).

Football fans can buy tickets to watch a home Truro City game at the Truro Sports Hub for this price, and considering this ground only opened in 2024, this is good going and very respectable from the decision makers at the football ground.

Some of the older and more run-down stadiums in the division, including Altrincham's J Davidson Stadium, charge up to £5 per match.

FGG says: Choose your matches carefully

It has to be said, the fact that the cheapest ticket for a Premier League match at Molineux is just £9.50 more than the cheapest ticket for a National League match is surprising. While the top-end prices in the Premier League are rightfully criticised, if you are careful and plan in advance, then you can still go and watch top-flight football on the (relative) cheap in England.
