As one of the 10 host cities at Euro 2024, Dusseldorf has seen hundreds of thousands of football fans over the past couple of weeks. The city's main football stadium, Merkur Spiel-Arena, has already played host to four matches at the tournament and it will welcome England and Switzerland this weekend for its final match of Euro 2024.
England fans and Switzerland fans will be making their way over to Dusseldorf in the coming hours and days in preparation for the match, but what can they expect to find in the city? Here are the best things to do in Dusseldorf.
Dusseldorf Old Town

Dusseldorf Altstadt, otherwise known as Dusseldorf Old Town, is one of the most popular spots for tourists in the city, particularly those who like a drink.
The Old Town only covers around half a square kilometre, but it is literally just bar after bar after bar, all serving the famous local beer – Altbier. As such, it is affectionately known as the ‘longest bar in the world'.
DusselforF Altsaft can be found on the east banks of the River Rhine, on the opposite side of the popular Rhine Promenade.
This area will get packed in the evenings in the days leading up to England vs Switzerland, so if you want to enjoy the stunning architecture and narrow walkways without a drink then make sure to pay a visit in the morning or early afternoon.
Dusseldorf Beer Hall
One thing that many fans of Euro 2024 have been keen to experience during their stay in Germany is the famous beer halls.
These beer halls are traditional German drinking hubs where beer is mostly served via steins, and guests are encouraged to dance on the long benches.
Dusseldorf has several beer halls, but the biggest and most popular are:
- Uerige – Berger Str. 1, 40213 Düsseldorf, Germany
- Brauerei Schumacher – Oststr. 123, 40210 Düsseldorf, Germany
- Brauerei Im Fuchschen – Ratinger Str. 28, 40213 Dusseldorf, Germany
Dusseldorf tourist attractions
Dusseldorf has several tourist attractions if you want to take a break from drinking and sample some culture. The River Rhine is arguably its biggest selling point – it is the biggest river in Germany, so why not enjoy a cruise down it while taking in some of the sights?
On the banks of the River Rhine is the Rhine Promenade. This pedestrianised area on the river's banks is stunning and particularly popular with cyclists and runners. However, there's nothing stopping you from taking a stroll down the promenade with a morning coffee to soak up the beauty of the Rhine.
Another popular tourist attraction is the Rhine Tower. This large 240-metre tall tower offers tourists the best possible views of Dusseldorf from the revolving observation deck at the top.
One of our favourite transformations, a 6-lane expressway cutting the city off from the riverbank was transformed into the River Rhine Promenade in Dusseldorf.
The expressway was moved underground, the top paved simply in tarmac. Lining the river are temporary restaurants, beer… pic.twitter.com/BE96R54rVP

Visiting the Dusseldorf football stadium
The Merkur Spiel-Arena is the main football stadium in Dusseldorf and is the home ground of Fortuna Düsseldorf, who currently play in the second tier of German football. The stadium has a capacity of 54,600 and is one of the ten host stadiums for Euro 2024.
To get to the Dusseldorf football stadium, fans are advised to get the metro from the city centre on the U78 (U-Bahn) line. The stadium has its own station – Merkur Spiel Arena/Messe Nord – and it is the last stop on this line.
