Getafe CF's ongoing renovation of the Coliseum has sparked complaints from local residents and visiting supporters, with construction disruption and restrictions on away tickets creating frustration as work continues at the La Liga ground.
The project is intended to modernise the stadium and increase its capacity, but concerns remain over the impact of the work on the surrounding neighbourhood and the lack of away-fan allocations for domestic fixtures.
Coliseum renovation draws criticism from residents and rival fans
The renovation began in the summer of 2025 after concerns about the stadium's condition, with the project set to increase capacity from around 16,000 to 19,500. The work is now approximately halfway complete, with the Coliseum gradually taking on a more modern and uniform appearance.
However, local residents have complained about noise, vibrations and dust caused by construction work, particularly during the summer when demolition and piling required heavy machinery. Some reported that the noise continued for much of the day, with work starting as early as 7am and lasting until 7.30pm.
Residents have raised their concerns with the local authorities, including the Environment Department and police. Getafe City Council has confirmed that the building permit includes conditions covering noise and dust, while officials are attempting to arrange a meeting between residents and the project management team to discuss ways of reducing disruption.
The renovation is scheduled to continue until December 2027, leaving residents concerned about how much longer the problems could persist.
Away supporters have also been affected by the work. While visiting fans receive allocations for Conference League matches in line with UEFA regulations, no equivalent allocation is available for La Liga fixtures.
The situation has frustrated rival supporters, with Rayo Vallecano once again unable to bring its travelling fans to the Coliseum for a league meeting with Getafe. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the absence of away supporters marked another occasion on which visiting fans were unable to attend the fixture.
Although the renovation promises to deliver an improved stadium for Getafe, complaints from residents and rival supporters show that the project continues to create difficulties beyond the ground itself.
FGG Says: Coliseum improvements must not come at the expense of residents and away fans
Modernising the Coliseum is an important step for Getafe, but the benefits will be harder to celebrate while residents continue to deal with construction disruption and visiting supporters miss out on attending matches.
With work expected to continue until December 2027, Getafe and the relevant authorities need to address these concerns while ensuring the renovation delivers a better experience for everyone connected to the stadium.
