Pep Guardiola says the memories created at Manchester City matter more to him than any permanent tribute, despite growing reports that the club are likely to name the newly expanded North Stand in his honour.
The Spaniard is now expected to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer after a remarkable decade in charge, with discussions reportedly underway over a fitting way to recognise his extraordinary impact on the club.
Man City in talks over renaming North Stand in honour of Pep Guardiola
City supporters are preparing for an emotional farewell after shock reports emerged on Monday night that Guardiola plans to leave the club a year before his current contract expires.
The Sun claim talks are already underway over naming the club’s redeveloped North Stand after the Spaniard, whose side have won 17 major trophies during his time in Manchester.
The expanded stand is due to officially open on Sunday, and would become the latest tribute to one of City’s modern greats, following statues for Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.
However, Guardiola himself appeared reluctant to focus on personal honours when asked about the possibility, which the report suggests is now very likely.
“I have no idea about that,” he said. “They don’t have to do anything, honestly.
“The important thing in our lives is when you look back and say ‘wow’ and you can do it with a big smile, that is good.”
Despite continuing to publicly insist he still has one more year remaining on his contract, Guardiola also spoke emotionally about the memories created alongside players such as Bernardo Silva and John Stones, who are also expected to depart this summer.
Former assistant Enzo Maresca has already emerged as a leading contender to replace Guardiola should his exit be officially confirmed.

FGG says: Pep Guardiola deserves a lasting Etihad Stadium tribute
Few managers in football history have transformed a club as profoundly as Pep Guardiola has transformed Man City.
Beyond the relentless trophy haul, he has elevated expectations, reshaped the club’s culture and set new standards across every level of the Etihad.
Under his leadership, City have produced some of the most dominant and aesthetically brilliant football the English game has ever seen.
If the club ultimately chooses to rename the North Stand in his honour, it would be a fitting tribute to the most successful era in City’s history.
Stadium stands are about identity, legacy and shared memories, and Guardiola has given City supporters more unforgettable moments than almost anyone associated with the club.
