‘He’s getting sacked’ – Football fans in disbelief at Jamie Carragher joke

Football fans across the world have taken to social media to express their disbelief at a viral clip going around of a recent Jamie Carragher joke. The former Liverpool defender was working for CBS on their Champions League coverage of Porto vs Arsenal last night when he perhaps overstepped the line to make a comment about presenter, Kate Abdo's personal life.

CBS' Sports Golazo has become very popular with fans over the last couple of years with the rapport built between Abdo, Carragher, Micah Richards and Thierry Henry clear for all to see. The show proves that live football can be presented to audiences in a more lighthearted and informal way but fans believe Carragher's latest remark has gone beyond that.

A running joke on the show, and on social media, is that Thierry Henry is in love with Kate Abdo. While the joke is purely tongue in cheek, Carragher took the opportunity last night to claim that the presenter “isn't loyal to Malik” in reference to her fiance Malik Scott.

When Carragher came out with the comment, the other three panelists were visibly shocked with Abdo exclaiming “What?!” while Henry turned his head to him in disbelief while Richards immediately looked down in embarrassment. The ‘joke' didn't land and Carragher was forced to try and backtrack, saying that “Malik hasn't had a mention yet.”

Jamie Carragher joke: Fans react

It wasn't just Henry, Richards and Abdo who were in disbelief at the comment with fans taking to X to make their feelings known on the matter. One fan said “Ahhh you know that friend who just doesn’t understand the line with jokes. He thought they were all going to crack up as well this is awful viewing.”

Echoing this sentiment, another said: “That one friend that gets too excited and says something insane to dead the mood” while a third added: “You can feel the second-hand embarrassment.”

Others were quick to note the reaction of all four panelists. One person picked up on Carragher's realisation that the joke didn't land saying “Jamie’s laugh after he said it is the dry laugh you do when you realise your joke didn’t land and it might actually be quite offensive.”

Another person found Richards' reaction quite telling. They said: “You KNOW it's not a joke anymore when Micah Richards isn't laughing his head off at it.”

Some fans even believe that Carragher could get in hot water due to the incident with countless people predicting he is facing the sack. While that remains to be seen, we will likely see a more filtered version of him next time he is on our screens.
