Luton fans ‘deserve it’ says former Tottenham winger

Fomer Tottenham and Crystal Palace winger, Andros Townsend, has been enjoying himself at Luton Town this season. The 32-year-old joined the club as a free agent on a short-term deal until January but has since committed his long-term future to the Hatters after impressing the club's hierarchy in his short time at Kenilworth Road.

Townsend has also impressed the Luton fans during his time at the club, and has never failed to give anything less than 100% regardless of whether he has started the match or been on the substitutes bench.

With eight games of their Premier League season left, Luton are still in with a fighting chance of staying in the top flight but they are going to need to start winning games again after a nine-game stretch without a win. They are three points adrift of Nottingham Forest in 17th place and Townsend will be doing everything he can to help his team close that gap to help the Hatters stay up.

Townsend on ‘incredible' Luton fans

Speaking ahead of Luton's match with Arsenal on Wednesday night, the 32-year-old said he was doing it for the supporters:

“They’re incredible, they’re true supporters. They support us when we play well, when we don’t play well, they support us when we win, we draw, we lose, we’re so grateful to them and we’re so desperate to give them something to cheer about at the end of the season.”

“I know we’ve dropped into the relegation zone, but we’re still in the hunt, we’re still fighting, still battling and hopefully we can give them something to cheer about at the end of the season, as if there’s a fanbase that deserves to be celebrating at the end of the season it’s those guys.”

Bouncing back from a disappointing defeat

Townsend's comments about the fanbase will resonate with many, particularly on the back of recent disappointing performances where they've thrown leads away. Speaking about the recent loss to Tottenham, where Luton had led 1-0, the winger said:

“It's always a tough one to take. We’ve been on the flip side where we’ve nicked something in the last minute, so it’s always devastating when you concede in the last minute, but especially when you defend so well for most of the game. We scored early and then it’s about holding on and being resolute, trying to hit them on the counter attack.

“Unfortunately again after half time we switched off and they equalised. Then it’s an uphill battle when you’re playing against a resurgent team, the crowd get behind them and it’s wave after wave. We almost held out and almost equalised at the end, but everyone’s devastated.”
