Tottenham fans will make the long journey up from North London to Manchester on Saturday, 10 October, to see their team face Manchester United at Old Trafford.
With Spurs still winless in the Premier League this season, making a round trip of more than 350 miles is not likely to be something most Tottenham fans are particularly excited about, but it's one that more than 3,000 will make with all away tickets sold out.
With kick-off not until 17:30, some fans will elect to stay over in Manchester after the match. Factoring that in, we have calculated the estimated total cost for the average Spurs fan on Saturday.
| Expense | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Tottenham away match ticket | £30 |
| Return train: London–Manchester | £130 |
| Travel to London station and back | £10 |
| Manchester local transport and tram | £6.10 |
| One night in a budget hotel | £85 |
| Food/drink | £60 |
| Total per person | £320.10 |
Man Utd vs Tottenham away day cost breakdown
The total cost of the trip to Old Trafford this weekend for the average Spurs fan works out at around £320. This is a lot of money to fork out on one football match, with the 17:30 kick-off time unhelpful for most supporters.
Ticket
The match ticket is priced at £30, thanks to a Premier League scheme which caps all away tickets at this price.
Travel
Travel is always going to be pricey when a London-Manchester journey is involved. Same-day or next-day return rail travel between London and Manchester this weekend is priced, on average, at £130. Some fans may elect to drive, but with soaring petrol and diesel costs, this is unlikely to be much cheaper.
For fans attempting to complete the trip without an overnight stay, there are only three services that are realistically achievable – the 20:15, the 20:35 and the 20:40. It roughly takes around 50 minutes to get from the stadium to Manchester Piccadilly, when you factor in navigating crowds, queueing for the Metrolink and the Metrolink journey (15-20 minutes).
With the match scheduled to finish around 19:30, Spurs fans will need to make a sharp exit if they want to make any of these trians.
There are also Metrolink costs to factor in (£6.10) and any costs from London Euston onwards – let's call this £10.
Accomodation
The average price for a budget hotel near Old Trafford on Saturday is £85. For those rushing to make any of the three aforementioned trains, this cost can be shaved off the overall price, making the trip seem more justifiable at around £245.
Food/drink
Drinking and eating in Manchester is no longer a cheap day out. The average price for a pint in a pub near Old Trafford is around £6.50, while lunch is going to cost around £12. As Spurs fans will be out all day, they will also need to grab something for tea, which adds another £20 to the cost. If we're estimating the average Spurs fan will have four pints on Saturday, the overall food/drink cost for the day will be around the £60 mark.
