A new date set for Leicester City vs Southampton

Fans have become increasingly more affected by late changes to dates and kick-off times for matches this season, however, for once, this time rescheduling is at least justifiable.

With Enzo Maresca's side sustaining their impressive league form in this season's FA Cup and reaching the quarter-finals of the competition, the Foxes are now set to face Chelsea on Sunday, March 17.

As a result, it means that the former Premier League champions are unable to play against Southampton on the original date for the fixture, with that initially taking place just two days before their quarter-final clash, on March 15.

That match has now been rearranged to take place on Tuesday, April 23, with a kick-off time of 7:45 pm.

A monumental clash

Saints Supporters could be forgiven for feeling frustrated at the postponement given just how important the outcome of this match could be come the end of the season.

Southampton currently sit in fourth place in the Championship while the Foces are leading the way, three points clear of second-place Ipswich at the time of writing. With both sides jostling for positions at the business end of the table then, if one of them was able to secure a victory it would be a massive boost for their respective seasons.

Russel Martin's side may also feel as though they have been robbed of the opportunity to face the league leaders at a good time, with the East Midlands club managing just two wins in their last five league fixtures. The postponement also means that Southampton will now have to endure a three-game week, with their trip to Leicester sandwiched between matches against Cardiff City and Stoke City.

How did the fans react?

Surprisingly, many Southampton fans were fairly upbeat regarding the news. One fan took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their relief that a Tuesday had been selected for the match, saying “Phew, it’s not on a Friday”. While another was keen to view the fixture as a potential “Warm up for the play-off final.”

Understandably, Foxes fans were impartial to the new date, with the vast majority simply too focused on their upcoming FA Cup quarter-final clash against Chelsea to be negative.
