Police raid stadium to arrest Premier League pair over rape

Police descended on an unnamed Premier League stadium this weekend to arrest two Premier League players on suspicion of rape.

One of the players, who is 19 years old, was interviewed by police at the stadium before he was formally arrested later in the day. He was spoken to on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape.

The other player, who is also 19, was arrested the following day. He was questioned on suspicion of rape.

The alleged incident in question is said to have taken place on Friday evening. Both have since been released on bail, pending further investigation.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “One of the players was at the club’s stadium. The police arrived wanting to speak to him. He was taken to a private room within the ground and was spoken to by police.”

“The player left the club with another individual and was formally arrested by police later that night.”

What have the authorities said?

A police spokesperson said: “Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape. A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. Both men have since been released on police bail.”

A spokesperson from the Premier League club in question told The Sun: “As the matter is now in the hands of the police, the Football Club will not be making further comment at this stage.”

Premier League problem

This is unfortunately not the first time that Premier League players have been embroiled in these sorts of scandals.

Mason Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 after the forward was arrested for attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. The charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Multiple women accused former Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy of rape, but Mendy was cleared after two trials last year.

The Premier League have since introduced sexual consent lessons for all players.
