Portsmouth fans celebrate promotion with ‘stunning’ pitch invasion

Portsmouth are back in the Championship for the first time in 12 years after sealing promotion last night with a 3-2 victory over Barnsley at Fratton Park. Pompey had to come from behind late on to win the match and the full-time whistle was met with a combination of relief and elation all around Fratton Park.

As soon as the full-time whistle went at Fratton Park, thousands of Portsmouth fans rushed onto the pitch to celebrate with the players and staff in brilliant scenes on the South Coast. The Pompey faithful have to endure a rough decade and at times, there have been doubts about whether the club would go under.

In 2015, they finished as low as 16th in League Two but they can now look forward to Championship football again, and perhaps even start thinking about a Premier League return. During their most recent stint in the top flight, Portsmouth enjoyed an FA Cup triumph and a top-seven finish.

Portsmouth fans celebrate promotion: Drone footage captured

While it's always a great moment for any supporter when their team secures promotion, the footage captured of Portsmouth fans celebrating their League One glory looked particularly special thanks to the use of drone technology.

Clearly anticipating what could happen, a local photographer sent up a drone to get a birds-eye view of the celebrations above Fratton Park and the recording didn't disappoint.

Fans on social media were in awe of the footage. One said: “Amazing. Great video. I spotted the drone towards the end of the game and hoped it would get something like this.” Another posted: “Thank you for capturing this beautiful moment so stunningly.”

A third added: “That is utterly SENSATIONAL footage! Pompey at its finest! A real piece of history filmed right there.”
